Nizar Qabbani is the most celebrated and popular poet in contemporary Arabic Literature. He remains one of the most prolific and influential Avant-guard poets of Modern Arabic Poetry. Nizar started his career writing about love, romance and romantic and erotic topics. These were fiery subjects and mostly taboo at the time. He was severely criticized by the conservative establishments, but this never deterred him. His goal was to expose the injustice imposed on women, to openly discuss love and passion without shame, and to free the Arab spirit from the years of bondage in the dungeons of past traditions. His poetry later evolved into the political arena, and he wrote the most moving and effective political poetry criticizing the then current Arab regimes and exposing their failures, complacency and ultimate defeat in facing the national responsibility that they were entrusted with. In his poetry, Nizar continued the theme of love poetry that was started by Omru’ al-Qays in Pre Islamic Arabia and then popularized by the two Umayyad poets: Jamil Bin Mu ‘ammar and ‘Umar Bin Abi Rabi ‘a. In his poetry, Nizar combined the elegance, transparency, sexuality, and piety of the three poets and brought poetry to the homes and dining tables of the millions in the Arab world who loved him and admired his poems. He wanted to make poetry like bread a daily nourishment available to every person who could read Arabic. On the other hand, when Nizar Qabbani wrote his political poetry, he was focused, critical, harsh, punitive, severe and unforgiving. He was bleeding for his nation and eulogizing its failures and defeats. When Nizar wrote about love, he dipped his plum in Jasmine and rose water. But when he wrote his political satire, he dipped his pen in blood. This book is not about sex and seduction. This book is an existential document written by an abused woman awaiting her execution. She knew that there is “No Exit,” yet she chose to overcome her fate and write. This is a surrealistic diary of a frustrated female pushed to her limits by the costumes, traditions, and beliefs of a rigid society that treats women as slaves and empowers men to rule over them. This nameless female, a modern Scheherazade, stood face to face against her assassin in her attempt to triumph over death by documenting her story, and consequently, the story of the millions of women who were sacrificed daily in the bedchamber of Shahrayar . However, the frustration, anger, despair and dejection of all these women is also evident and is shared by men at the end of the book as the “ men” admit their guilt and sin that has accompanied them since the “Age of Ignorance” in Pre-Islamic Arabia.

About the Author
George Nicolas El-Hage, Ph.D. is a Lebanese-American poet, professor, linguist, administrator and writer. He was born in Mansourieh El-Metn, Lebanon in 1952. His father was Nicolas Iskandar El-Hage and his mother was Martha Abounader El-Hage. Dr. El-Hage completed his elementary and secondary school education in Lebanon. He acquired his B.A. in Arabic Literature from the Lebanese University in Beirut, Lebanon. While in Beirut, El-Hage studied with and was influenced by poets like Buland al-Haidari and Khalil Hawi. He then emigrated to the United States where he completed both his Master of Arts and Ph.D. in Arabic and Comparative Literature at the State University of New York in Binghamton. His dissertation (later published into a book by NDU Press, Lebanon) was on William Blake and Kahlil Gibran: Poets of Prophetic Vision. He has taught at Yale University, Binghamton University, The Lebanese University, Columbia University, the Monterey Institute of International Studies (a graduate school of Middlebury College) and the Defense Language Institute. His academic career has been equally spent between teaching, authoring, lecturing and administration. Dr. El-Hage is a prolific writer with a perfect command of both English and Arabic languages. His training and expertise in the field of Arabic and Comparative Literature has enabled him to delve into a wide range of topics and areas covering Literature, mythology, mysticism, language acquisition, criticism, theology and art. He is a published poet in Arabic, both in Modern Standard and in spoken Levantine Dialect as well as in Lebanese Zajal. He also writes poetry in English and is an accomplished translator. Dr. El-Hage has published seven volumes of poetry, numerous research articles, books on language pedagogy and poetry in Lebanese Dialect and Zajal. His poetry betrays a marked fluctuation between a deep romantic sensitivity and a tragic existential awareness which colors his reading of current universal and regional events. The tragedy of his embattled country constitutes a dominant theme in his writings. El-Hage is a supporter of the free verse movement in Modern Arabic Poetry. Nevertheless, he still appreciates the Qasida ‘Amudiyya, the classical form of traditional Arabic Poetry. He always chooses short meters, and his poetry is characterized by its musical effects.

I was excited to get any new English translation of Nizar Quabbani's poetry. This book did not disappoint. It is a very powerful and modern commentary on the past and present situation of many women. Quabbani challenges men to look at women as equals and treat them as the jewels they are instead of seeing them as possessions. A nice translation. I hope for more English translations in the future.

Props from a colleage

Chris has indeed earned the 5 stars I gave him as he is so onto the way.As the first published on this method In the decade since I have waiting for someone to add to the debate. I have seen enough evidence to be certain of it and have even predicted new evidence that has been discovered. Indeed his version of the lifts might have been used in the Americas on their steeper structures, especially on the elevator lifts at places like Tiajanaco ,Macchu Picchu and Ollantatumbo. A great piece of work sir.

Fascinating and an engineer's dream of a book!

Chris Massey not only explains his excellent theory on how the pyramids were built but also weaves an enjoyable travel narrative along the way. A construction engineer by profession with an insatiable curiosity, he came up with a building technique that is very hard to find flaws in. He even demonstrates his idea with small scale experiments to prove it. I'll not give away his idea since it will take away from the joy of discovering it yourself as you follow along with him on his tourist trip through Egypt.

I had traveled to Egypt a while back and followed almost the identical itinerary as Mr. Massey. Returning home, I bought a few books on Egyptian history and when done with those, I discovered this book.

If you have the slightest bit of engineer in you or have a love of puzzles or mystery, you'll enjoy this fascinating book.

Loved the Light

I love a book like this that I can jump around to different chapters. No need to "begin at the beginning." I have to say that I enjoyed Keidi's own story of her Light experience more than any of the others. Entering different dimensions and meeting higher beings there is so cool. I was drawn to "Healing the Past" because I teach a form of that in my own work. The uncorrected past blocks us until we drop it, and this was also the opinion of the author, Mr. Waterborn. My next favorite part was "Manifesting Miracles." Dr. Morter gives us lessons in Miracle Making 101. I have always felt like Dr. Morter that miracles are natural events that we miss because our sight is not finely tuned enough. This whole book is one big miracle, and I love the way it made its way to the world. Magical path, indeed.

Do yourself a favor, and experience (not read) this book. Whenever you are down, pick it up and start reading anywhere in it. The Light will guide you to what you need in that moment. Try it and see. you will be as amazed as I was. Enjoy!

New Inspiration for 2013!

Keidi has done an amazing job. Her work with so many fantastic luminaries is awe inspiring. It's nice to find more authors writing positive and encouraging works today. I'm excited and pleased to have this book in my collection, and happily recommend it to anyone who wishes to find positive literary works of art.

A Compendium of Wisdom and Inspiration

Before the publication of this highly enjoyable and wonderful book, I interviewed Keidi Keating for "Sharing Your Passion", my interview film series.
What struck me then and remains so now is the uniqueness of Keidi's project. Here was a young lady assembling a cast of twenty-two highly evolved souls to produce a book, not only on how they each came to find the light within themselves, but also on how "we" - the readers - might also do so.
This compendium of souls had, Keidi explained, mentored or helped her in some way.
"The book is my way of giving back," she said. "I want to share the wisdom. It's not "my" book; I see it as selfless service..."
Keidi's selflessness is epitomised by the book's non-commercial status. All of the net profits go to charity. Keidi has thus created something which entirely benefits others - well, almost! I say "almost" only because I foresee Keidi getting a lot of kudos and praise for what she has manifested here, and deservedly so.

The book is non-fiction - just to be clear. Still it contains many wonderful stories. It is of course about light, but in the spiritual sense, and in the metaphoric sense and in the individual awakening sense. It looks at light from the sensory and non-sensory perspectives. And it is about seeing the world in a different, positive and uplifting light
For example, I am not a Quantum Physicist but, if I were, I would probably tell you that everything is energy. Since everything means everything, light is also energy. And so everything is also light. We humans are light, even though it appears to our five senses that we are physical bodies. And so we are capable of so much more than what we believe we can do with and in our physical bodies.
Light is used as a metaphor throughout the book. This is light as awareness, as in the phrase "seeing the light."
Investigating the so-called "Inner Light", also known as "the True Self", "the Soul" or "the Heart," the book illustrates the importance of acknowledging this light as part of the Oneness of who we are, so that we may, for example, allow the light to flow and so allow life itself to create through us.

The book is a rich source of wisdom and inspiration. I particularly liked the following:

"Once the need to survive is removed from the Mind's experience, the Soul has the space and freedom to express it's true nature. We then start walking through the world in an entirely different way; no longer stressing and straining, no longer competing, no longer looking for the advantage, no longer needing, wanting or asking for anything. We simply stand in the space of life with a single and simple question: "How may I serve you, how may I love you, how may I be here with you in such a way that you know exactly who you really are?" - Neale Donald Walsh

"Only through more loving can more things be healed" - John Roger

"Today corporations, not governments control global economics. We are those corporations. Many of us work for them and almost all of us buy from them. Up until now, we have sent a strong message that we want high quality but inexpensive shirts and jeans and that if they are made in sweat shops in Asia or Latin America, we will turn a blind eye and look the other way. We send the message that we want cheaper petrol for our cars and if that means destroying the Amazon rainforest, then we will turn a blind eye and look the other way. This has to change. The book covers considerable ground. There is so much you can find here - from the power of feng shui to the power of forgiveness; from reversing the ageing process to working with angels; from releasing blockages to living as unconditional love. And I am just touching the surface!

Without naming the writers concerned - buy the book and see for yourself - I loved the chapters on flowing with the river of light, the divine artist, the colours of love and understanding the light, respectively. And when I read the book again, I may give you a different selection!
This is a book to refer back to, one that I will certainly re-read, and maybe more than once. And, as with many of the best spiritual books, I sense I will find something new every time I dip in.

To read The Light is to be reminded of who we really are or, if you prefer, who we really can be. The reader is given many paths and opportunities and ample encouragement, not only to see life in a much bigger light but to fully embrace it. And there are practical exercises to help!

The book is not for everyone. And I do not say that lightly! In Keidi's own words, "anybody who is meant to find the book, will find it..."

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone and those who are not in the US happy Thursday. If you have been reading my blogs for the past few months you would know that I'm a huge Ava Stone fan and absolutely love her writing, and adore most of her characters. However, there has been one character I've had the hardest time with and that would be Captain Russell Avery.

I'm really surprise on how soft I went on him in the last review, because if you follow me on twitter I wasn't so nice. I actually really despised him and thought he deserve what he got in the end of The English Lieutenant's Lady. After all he didn't love the girl he was betrothed to and treated her more like an object. Let's be honest that doesn't go over well with me. Without further ado let me share Ava's newest book To Catch a Captain and what I thought of it.

We catch up with Captain Russell Avery at his brother's home not really morning the lost of Phoebe Greywood, but just suffering from a wounded pride. It wasn't like he was in love with the girl, but his pride took a toll. Poor Russ. Sorry he won't get any sympathy from me. Anyways, he meets Bridgett Kelly while staying at his sister's home in Bayhurst Court. Lets just say he was struck by Bridgett appearance.

Now my thoughts. First off, Russ is still not my favorite guy, but he has risen a notch or two. He does have some redeemable qualities in the story. I mean when a guy goes beats up a dude that tried to kill Bridgett, because she happens to be Irish deserves to rise a little. There were times I did burst out laughing at Russ, because I thought they were funny. (Yes, I do have a mean bone in my body). However, I do love Bridgett; I think her character was the sweetest and kindest. I think she is perfect for Russ, even though he has some major flaws. Overall, I thought the book was a sweet story and as painful as it is for me to say this I'm glad Russ found happiness. It was a pretty good read and I hope you get a chance to read Russ' story and the other books in the Heroes Return trilogy.

The bigger they are...

The harder they fall. And Russell Avery is th he biggest womanizer on the continent. He's never been in love, not even with Phoebe, who he was engaged to and treated abominably. When his brother and best friend elopes with her, he's devastated. He doesn't miss Phoebe, though. He misses Russell, who he feels betrayed him.

It's at this point that he meets Bridget. He's attracted to her from the start, but for once he puts someone else before himself and decides to go back to London, far from temptation. But out of sight does not mean out of mind, and Russell eventually comes to the realization that he's in love.

Great Love Story!

I just loved this story. I just read this book in one setting it was that captivating. I couldn't put it down this is by far my favorite regency romance novel. It was more about feelings than the actual deed. Briget Kelly is a young Irish girl who goes to live with friends of her late brother. She has a bit of a bumpy beginning but she manages to settle in and fall head over heels for Captain Russel Avery. Who happens to be a self professed rake of the worst kind. Captain Avery has plenty of redeeming qualities like kindness, compassion and integrity even though it won't admit it. He believes it can't love just one woman so he leaves her because he has a misguided notion that its for her own good. I think he was just afraid to admit he has feelings for briget. So after he leaves her and heads to London she ends up in London as well and his realises he can't go on without her when he believes she will meet and marry another man.
