Another about a trust issue

I didn't like this book at all. The couple were married to each other, then divorced and separated for years, and remarried to someone else during that time. The H had a child with the someone else by the way. The couple had originally separated because he believed some other catty woman about the h having an abortion. She miscarried you fool!!! Why does this author tend to put such a long separstion between her H/h? Not to mention over such a stupid thing. How can you claim you love someone if you don't trust them?

Definately for beginners.

First off, this IS just like the back of the book says, "Level: Introductory to Intermediate." From the first chapter to the last, old style console words like ReadLn and WriteLn are used and bring back old memories, as the source code is all in console mode. No Windows programs here, but if you are in need of learning just what it says "Learn Object Pascal with Delphi" then that's exactly what you get. The companion CD has Delphi5 Standard version and all of the books source code.
There is only one chapter devoted to Objects and that I find fault with. It is called "Introduction to Object Oriented Programming with Object Pascal." In my opinion there should be more on this subject, but like the book title says, "Object Pascal" should be taken quite literally. This chapter is also done in console mode code.
I would have liked this book to have at least gone towards program code being in the Windows environment towards the middle to end. The many other code learning books I own start out teaching in console mode, then progress to using Windows for what it really is for. This book does not do that, it just stays in console mode start to end.
If you need to learn Object Pascal and have little to no experience in programming, then this book is excellent for you.

Excellent primer for OOP in Delphi

Most Delphi books cover the language well, but focus a lot on the IDE and windowing/display stuff.

Not so much with this book, it gets down to the nitty gritty with the code and shows you how to do OOP right with Delphi. No windows stuff here, it's from the prompt. But it provides you with skills you can definitely take to windows.

Who this book is good for:

Beginners to Delphi or programming who want to get started.
Delphi programmers who want to do more OOP.
Delphi programmers who want to write better code.

It's a great tool to have in your arsenal.

Another poor book by a poor author.

To give this book even one star is being too generous. This is the second book from this author that I purchased. The first was "The Tomes of Delphi Win32 Database Developer's Guide" it was bad and this one is even worse. I vow never to buy another book by this author. He seems to think that just mentioning a topic is adequate coverage. His sample code is incomplete and misleading and the Quick Check sections often present review questions that don't relate to the section just covered. This book is obviously written by an author who is not an expert in the topic he is writing about. Other books that cover this topic better are "Mastering Delphi 5", "Delphi 5 Developer's Guide", and "Teach Yourself Delphi 4". The publisher is doing us all a disservice by publishing this guy's books.

Good but not for absolute beginner

I am a beginner/intermediate level italian learner and this was pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Something easier than online italian newspapers to help me get used to italian grammar and pick up some more vocabulary in context. I've only made it through the first 8 "stories" and supposedly it gets tougher as it goes, so I'm looking forward to a little more advanced learning. Oh, and it comes with a CD that has MP3s so I can listen in my car on the way to work, nice bonus for the price.

Definitely not for the absolute beginner, not sure why they would even suggest that in the item description. You have to have had at least some basic grammar and vocab otherwise this would be torture. But if you know how to conjugate present tense, agreement of subject and adjective, masc vs fem nouns, you should be ok (at least for the beginning).

It's For YOU!

I'm surprised by some of the reviewers who said that this book is not for the beginning student, that it is much too difficult and should be tackled only if the reader is at the intermediate level.

When I first obtained "Easy Italian Reader," I wasn't sure that it would be what I wanted. I had been pursuing a self-taught approach for about 6 months. I had worked through some fundamental Italian vocabulary and grammar, and needed something that would place the words in a larger context, so that one sentence would connect with another in a conversational or essay form. In short, I was ready for a reading text, but one which would not be overwhelming or too advanced for my understanding.

To my delight, I discovered that this book was exactly what I had hoped it would be. It presents a progressive reading format, starting with selections which are relatively simple, then moving to those which add more sophisticated vocabulary and become more complex in grammatical structure. The selections are grouped by theme into three sections: the experiences of two school friends; Italian history; and Italian literature. Each selection has a small glossary for particular words or phrases that are pertinent to the topic (a more extensive Italian to English glossary is at the back of the book) and simple exercises to test reading comprehension. The literature section also includes short, but interesting profiles in English about each selected author.

I have found "Easy Italian Reader" not only to be very useful, but entertaining and informative as well. I would recommend it to students who have started to understand the basics of the Italian language and either want to begin or to expand the practical application of their knowledge. It is therefore appropriate for both the active beginner and the intermediate student.

Love this book!

I love the characters even the vile ones. The story is a great adventure story for children & adults. There are wonderful descriptions of the people, wildlife & vegetation of the Amazon. I will read this one again!

Missionary Story?

OK--so there isn't a missionary anywhere in this book, but it is the type of thing that every person who has ever been on the mission field can relate to...

Before Maia leaves England to go to Brazil to live with some long lost relatives, her friends tell her about all the "bad" things she will encounter. The crocs, the piranhas and headhunters, however she does her own research and quickly finds some good to look for and tries to enlighten her friends about how she is not going to the "ends of the earth" but rather a new and exciting country where she will have great adventures.

Most of the people that Maia meets in Brazil are typical of those you will meet in a any "foreign" embassy, company, mission agency, etc. You will have those who miss trivial things about their homecountries and will never be happy. You will find those who refuse to have anything to do with the natives and their way of life and thus make both their lives and the ones of those around them miserable. You will have those who reject their native land totally (for various reason) and totally inculturate themselves...and finally you will have those like Maia and her governess who decide to look for both the good and bad, the beautiful and the ugly to make it all "real" but also live a fuller happier life.

I am so glad that a friend suggested this book to read and while it made me homesick for the Amazon, it also gave me something that I can share with my daughter about the glories of just "living" rather than simply existing.

It doesn't have magic, but it's still her best novel

If you want ghosts and witches, then read any one of Ibbotson's other novels - they're all great, and perfect for Harry Potter fans. However Journey to the River Sea has its own kind of magic, and it's just as good as the stuff with wands and potions.
Maia, an orphan, is sent with her formidable but loving governess (shades of The Little White Horse) to stay with her unpleasant relations on the Amazon. They're being paid to take her in, and hate everything to do with the extraordinary country in which they find themselves as much as Maia loves it. Luckily for her, she makes friends with two boys - one a child actor playing Little Lord Fauntleroy on the boat over, the other a mysterious boy who lives in the jungle, who turns out to be the heir to a great title and fortune back in England. Maia's evil twin cousins and relations are soon plotting how to kill her and capture the boy, for whom a huge reward is being offered. But the love of her governess and friends may yet save her....
This won the Smarties Gold Prize in the UK and is expected to win the Carnegie too. It's unputdownable, packed with old-fashioned story-telling virtues from a great plot to characters you'd love to know.
