During the four years of the Civil War, the border between eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia was highly contested territory, alternately occupied by both the Confederacy and the Union. Though this territory was sparsely populated, the geography of the region made it a desirable stronghold for future tactical maneuvers. As the war progressed, the Cumberland Gap quickly became the target of invasion and occupation efforts of both armies, creating a chaos that would strain not only the soldiers but all those who called the area their home.

Contested Borderland examines the features of the region's geography and the influence of the attacks on borderlands caught in the crossfire of the Union and Confederate forces. The land surrounding the Kentucky-Virginia border contained valuable natural resources and geographic features considered essential to each army's advancement and proliferation. While the Appalachian Mountains barred travel through large parts of the region, the gaps allowed quick passages through otherwise difficult terrain and thus became hotly contested areas. Brian D. McKnight explores the tensions between the accomplishment of military goals and the maintenance of civilian life in the region.

With Kentucky remaining loyal to the Union and Virginia seceding to the Confederacy, populations residing between the two states faced pressure to declare loyalty to one side. Roadside towns found themselves the frequent hosts of soldiers from both sides, while more remote communities became shelters for those wishing to remain uninvolved in the conflict. Instead of committing themselves to either cause, many individuals claimed a neutral stance or feigned dedication to whichever side happened to occupy their land.

The dual occupation of the Union and Confederate armies consequentially divided the borderland population, creating hostilities within the region that would persist long after the war's conclusion. Contested Borderland is the first Civil War study exclusively devoted to the border separating eastern Kentucky and southwestern Virginia. McKnight's unprecedented geographical analysis of military tactics and civilian involvement provides a new and valuable dimension to the story of a region facing the turmoil of war.

I grew up with "green thumb" parents who tended to a number of gardens to grow vegetables for our own dinner table, including several of our neighbors throughout the community. I remember my father getting up at three in the morning every day during Winter to go out and stoke the fire of a pot bellied stove in his green house and to say good morning to thousands of flats of seedlings.

I hated vegetables and anything related to gardening back then, but these days as Spring approaches, I'm always eager to bid farewell to the grocery store and seek out my local Farmers Markets for fresh fruits and vegetables instead. For the past four years, I've poorly attempted to grow herbs and the occasional tomato or pepper plant in my back yard urban garden, and have since resorted to hostas and bulbs to satisfy by "green" family roots that are slowly turning me into my parents.

My father grew lucrative tomatos by the truck load using only manure, a water hose, and lots of love and attention. These days, I keep my lawn green using a Miracle Grow spray, but being interested in alternative and "greener" methods of caring for my habitat, I found Marc Remillard's book, Compost Tea Making, to be quite appealing.

Marc's book begins with an extensive and scientific approach to compost, what it's made of, how the organisms in it help each other and help the environment, and so on. It is quite obvious that he knows what he is talking about! However, Marc approaches the subject with an often humorous approach and appeals to the reader in almost a fun-loving grade school Biology teacher kind of way. Lastly, we learn how to make compost tea and how different environments benefit from it. Your flowers will bloom longer. Your vegetables and fruits will be more plentiful. Your lawn will be greener and healthier. Even vineyards can benefit from it. There's even a troubleshooting section to tell you what to expect and to help you through steps you might be doing wrong.

After absorbing such a wealth of information, I expected the actual brewing process to be just as elaborate, if not more complex. But the tools you need to set up your brewer can probably be purchased for under $50 total and can all be found at Home Depot.

At 120 pages, I was very impressed by Mr. Remillard's book because I didn't feel overwhelmed by useless information. I'm definitely not an expert gardener, and the author doesn't treat his readers as such. He takes you through every step of the process from beginning to end, but he doesn't just tell you how to do it. He thoroughly explains each and every aspect of the process as a whole so that you really do get a complete understanding from start to finish.

The book is laced with black and white microscope photos of various compost organisms giving the book a very professional and almost encyclopedic feel. There's also a personal interview with an organic farmer. I loved the "blurbs" from various plants and flowers on the book's exterior too!

So, if you are looking for alternative and "greener" methods for caring for your plants, flowers, lawn, trees, and more, or want to learn how to start composting, I highly recommend Marc Remillard's Compost Tea Making.

I'm glad I purchased this

I almost didn't buy this book because of the two poor reviews. Then I thought perhaps the reviewers could simply be the typical curmudgeons who are rarely pleased with anything. I found this book to be an enjoyable read, with practical, useful ideas. I do agree with the one curmudgeon, that Teeming With Microbes is an excellent book, but more general. Compost Tea Making focuses on simply that, going into further detail. The worm growing chapter is quite good. The chapter on EM (effective microorganisms) is short, and could be in more detail.

The ideas are presented in a style that encourages readers to experiment or modify recipes or techniques to suit their own needs. For those that somehow need definitive answers this book may not be for you. I am not one of those. The author illustrates how complex, and only partially understood microbiology is. The bottom line is--I am convinced. Compost tea and EM products are the wave of the future for horticulture. Without going into detail--my plants have benefited from just a few compost tea applications.

The Best Book on Compost Tea

This is a must-have for anyone who loves plants of any kind. The concept is really an eye opener. The author describes how important it is to have abundant microbial life in soils for the health of plants and ourselves. It goes into enough detail to get the reader to understand the facts, but not so much as to become tedious. It is actually a very good read. I like the authors style. It 's elegant, quirky, funny, and down-to-earth all rolled up together.
The chapter on worm growing is some of the best, most current information I have read. I was not aware that the book covered vermiculture until I got into it. Perhaps that could be advertised a bit better.
The chapter on actually making compost tea is well layed out, direct, and simple. I can do this. The section on the EM1 [effective microorganisms] product is really interesting and cutting edge. They have found that if you mix compost tea & EM1 together you have an extremely powerful elixir.

The Song Continues is an updated version of Horne's earlier My Life. Much of the text is the same. Even so, we needed an update, didn't we? For having a kind of "take no prisoners" style, Horne is pretty generous with foes as well as friends. (She doesn't re-tell the Sills/Scala incident here.) There are some new pictures, which is wonderful. Even more wonderful, and almost worth the purchase price all on its own, is the bonus CD. There are 18 songs on the CD. While they don't come up in chronological order, they are generally arranged earlier to later; you can still get the feeling for how that miraculous instrument evolved. I'm glad I have both books.

General Horne came, sang, and conquered

I'm listening to the CD that came with this book as I write my review. It contains rare live recordings of Marilyn Horne singing all over the fach from a 1963 'Traviata' (with Jan Peerce) of her early 'lirico spinto' days to the darker trouser-role of Arsace in "Semiramide," including an excerpt ("Und ist kein Betrug") from the part that brought her to the attention of the world: Marie in "Wozzeck."

I had read the original version of her ghosted biography, "Marilyn Horne: My Life," (1983) and I wondered if she would repeat the controversial blow-by-blow of her master class with Lotte Lehmann--yes, it's in "The Song Continues," too, where Lehmann blasts Horne for her bad German. In Lehmann's obituary, Martin Bernheimer ("Los Angeles Times:" September 5, 1976) speaks of the German soprano's master classes: "She commanded the stage, even in a classroom, with uncanny force. She was not particularly flexible, however, when it came to developing and encouraging an interpretation that might have conflicted with her own."

I think it was inevitable that these two strong-willed singers would clash. Marilyn didn't get her nickname, 'General Horne' just from the military trouser-roles she played. Her biography refers to her as "one of the few singers ever who could be both charmingly unaffected and magisterial." Most operatic biographies are repetitions of the theme, 'I came, I sang, I got rave reviews' but Marilyn Horne is a real human being in this book--warts, marital woes, and all. She manages to balance the 'General' with something her father once told her: "Whenever you think that you are getting too big for the people around you, remember all that separates you from the guy sitting next to you is a little piece of gristle in your throat."

She has been called "probably the greatest singer in the world" (Opera News, 1981). She is, without a doubt, one of the great 20th century mezzo-sopranos and one of 'the' Rossini interpreters of our time. She sang and recorded for over 40 years, partnering with three generations of 'Semiramides' in her illustrious career: Joan Sutherland; Montserrat Caballé; and June Anderson. Her instrument is powerful, agile, beautiful, and secure in every register. Just like a Stradivarius, she has a unique, opulent voice (one of my favorite opera authors accuses her of concealing a trombone in her chest). If you'd like to hear her sing before you purchase this biography, she has an extensive discography. Two of my own favorites are the Scimone "L'Italiana in Algeri" (Erato - 1980) and the famous 1980 Aix-en-Provence live performance of "Semiramide" with Montserrat Caballé and Samuel Ramey. The latter has all of the problems you might expect from the recording of a live performance, but my god, the singing!

The Mezzo Soprano American Diva In Her Own Words

Mezzo-sopranos are not the leading ladies in opera, the soprano is, but American-born Marilyn Horne became as big a star as any dramatic soprano diva. Her career span the 60's, 70's and 80's, she sang in all the leading opera houses- Met, Covent Garden, La Scala, etc and was an artist who upheld the most consummate musicianship. Her voice was not as dark or deep as say the voices of such mezzos as Giuletta Simionato, Fiorenza Cossotto, Grace Bumbry and Shirley Verrett. Hers was a voice that had a brassy, dramatic ring to it though she was clearly in her element as Rossini heroines- Neocle in Semiramide, Rosina in Barber of Seville, La Cenerentola - and she sang Carmen and Adalgisa in Norma opposite Joan Sutherland. She sang trouser roles like Cherubino. Not being in the spotlight was at first a struggle for Horne, but she overcame this by her dedication and sheer vocal artistry. Her voice is beautiful and BIG, a mezzo with lyric bravura and coloratura to boot. In her candid autobiography, she is warm and frank about all details of her career and her life. Marilyn Horne is still a very loved American singer and any mezzo-soprano who wants to win fame and not remain simply a mezzo can benefit immensely from this book.

This book introduces the fundamental concepts of Size Exclusion Chromatography with emphasis in the practical aspects, without going into many details, or mathematics, but gives the necessary information. It is very readable and it is not intended to the specialist in SEC, but for people who use it, especially in polymer analysis.
On the downside, it is very, very, very overpriced.

Does not teach you anything about HOW to create stories

OK .. here goes, this is my first really negative review on Amazon but I do feel it's important to be truthful.

Firstly, I believe in the power of story telling and how useful it is to tell a story that empowers an individual, so I was excited when I heard about this book.

Lisa spends most of her time telling you WHY story telling is important (very repetitively) but doesn't go into any depth about HOW TO construct a good story or how to work with clients or yourself on creating a transformative story.

It's full of stories to fill the spaces, most of them are meaningless .... more like sketches from a personal diary.

If you are looking for a book to learn from, this is not the one.

And what's with the positive reviews? They are what influenced me to buy this book. Waste of money.

I wanted to like this book a lot more than I was able to. It is strong on why stories work and there are some great stories in the book. The part I missed was how to choose or develop a story for your client and how to be an effective storyteller.
