Henry Kissinger are sometimes more beautifully written, this memoir is always clear

This is a memoir more than a history. Where memoirs of, say, Henry Kissinger are sometimes more beautifully written, this memoir is always clear, concise, honest and pointed, like Harry Truman himself. There is a touch of anti-Republican partisanship and even some excessive modesty, both of which accurately reflect the voice of Harry Truman himself. Since the book was written for Truman's contemporaries, the book will be most enjoyed by students of the history of the time, who are familiar with the players like Taft, Vandenburg, and Eisenhower, but the book is accessible enogh to be very enjoyable to almost anyone.

I read the book. Tempted to stop there and let my five-star rating speak for me, but this volume deserves more. It's insightful, well-written, and captures both a moment in history and a perspective that many tend to overlook. Highly recommended.

Required reading for anyone who discusses current affairs

This book is an amazing insight into history. So much of our modern world was determined at this time. Parts of the book are too long and detailed on matters that have become of little historic consequence, therefore some chapters can be skipped. However, other parts, including the Korean War, the creation of Israel, the creation of the United Nations and the beginning of the cold war are outstanding. His relationships with Eisenhower and MacArthur are also excellent. Truman does not discuss the White House renovation, the assassination attempt, or the insider financial scandal of his administration. This book is required reading for any student of 20th century history or anyone who claims to understand our current world. There are some uncanny parallels with 2014. My opinion of Truman has risen greatly.

Una historia de amor, una novela policiaca y un final sorpresivo.

Me gustó la redacción. Esta novela no está escrita de una forma tradicional. Hay párrafos que se repiten a través de la lectura, pero no están de sobra. Es una redacción jovial, con múltiples facetas donde el lector puede encontrar desde situaciones cómicas y groseras, hasta momentos de angustia y terror. Se entretejen momentos donde se disfruta la descripción de situaciones amorosas realmente hermosas. La historia ocurre en tres tiempos diferentes.

Marcus - el personaje principal, es un escritor joven que busca a Harry Quebert, su profesor universitario para que le ayude a superar un momento difícil al resultarle imposible resolver una situación de falta de creatividad para crear un libro que tiene que entregar a la editorial en pocas semanas.

Simultáneamente, el libro describe las situaciones que se dan en el pequeño pueblo al descubrirse el cadaver de una chica de quince años que desapareció hace más de tres décadas. La novela narra no sólo la trama principal que ocurre en Aurora - un pequeño pueblo costeño al noreste de New Hampshire, muy cerca de La frontera con Canada- También incluye situaciones cómicas estiló Woody Allen cuando interactúa con su madre telefónicamente, y con su editor.

La trama se va complicando pues en su intento de escribir su libro, va encontrando pistas de lo ocurrido en ese pequeño pueblo en agosto de 1975.

Esta es la segunda novela de Joel Dicker, sin embargo según entiendo es la primera que traducen al español. En mi personal opinión es una muy buena opción de lectura, en 2013 hay dos libros que he visto que estan de moda Perdida y esta, que he tenido de leer, a mi se me hizo de mejor historia, coherencia y credibilidad la de "La Verdad Sobre el Caso de Harry Quebert", La narración es diferente, interesante, inclusive hay momentos en que pareciera que es un caso real y te hace disfrutar mucho y leer rapido para saber que fue lo que sucedio. En algunos lugares lo ponen como un sucesor de Stieg Larsson de la trilogia de milenio, pero en lo personal, salvo que le autor es Sueco el tema no es tan obscuro como la trilogia de Millenium. El protagonista es muy diferente por lo que siento que algunos que esten buscando algo similar pueden confundirse por los comentarios de algunas personas.

About the Author
Tom Murphy is considered by many to be Ireland's greatest playwright. He has written twenty-five plays and has received numerous awards and nominations. Throughout his career, he has worked closely with the Abbey Theatre in Dublin and with Druid Theatre in Galway. His first successful play, A Whistle in the Dark, was performed at the Theatre Royal, Stratford East in 1961 where it caused great controversy. A major restrospective of his work was presented at the Abbey Theatre in 2001. He has published six play collections with Methuen Drama in the Contemporary Dramatists series.

A Must for Theatre People

I was reading about the festival of plays presented by Druid and then found this volume contining the plays that were presented. I am a huge fan of Irish theatre. It has been a joy to read the plays and experience the festival of plays through the written word.

About the Author

John N. Briere, PhD, is Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Psychology at the Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, where he consults and teaches in the ER, burn unit, and inpatient psychiatry, and Center Director of the USC Adolescent Trauma Training Center’s National Child Traumatic Stress Network. A past president of the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies, he is recipient of the Robert S. Laufer Memorial Award for Scientific Achievement from ISTSS, and the Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Science of Trauma Psychology from the American Psychological Association’s Division 56, and has been designated Highly Cited Researcher (Behavioral Sciences) by the Institute for Scientific Information. He is author of a number of books, articles, and psychological tests in the areas of trauma and interpersonal violence, and has a long-standing interest in the clinical applications of meditation, mindfulness, and compassion. Catherine Scott, MD, is Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and the Behavioral Sciences at the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. Her educational background includes Harvard College, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and psychiatric residency training at Cornell and USC. She was formerly Medical Director of the Psychological Trauma Program at Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center, and the Associate Medical Director of the Psychiatric Emergency Service at Los Angeles County + USC Medical Center, where she taught and supervised resident physicians and medical students in the assessment and treatment of trauma-related disorders arising from sexual and physical violence, torture, child abuse, and other forms of interpersonal violence. Although continuing to teach, Dr. Scott stepped down from administrative duties in order to pursue writing and research projects. Her clinical and research interests include human rights, women’s issues, and the remediation of sexual violence and its effects.

Excellent book for students trying to grasp PTSD

As a professor teaching post traumatic stress reaction to graduate and undergraduate students, I was looking for a book that hit the basics along with some key pieces regarding assessment, diagnostic criteria, and examples that highlighted some of the subtleties associated with complex trauma. This book is well organized and not too overwhelming for people new and beginning the field and a nice refresher for seasoned clinicians. Easy to read, clearly outlined to build upon each subject, I found it both a solid read, affordable, and made it a required read for my course. Please note that I purchased this book way back October 12, 2013 but only now getting to put my thoughts in writing.

This book is a good book if your looking for basic information about trauma therapy. However, it just really hits the basics, so unless you are reading it to just get started in the trauma field, it may be a bit remedial.

State of the Art Book!

This book was recommended to me by my graduate school professor as being the most up-to-date, most inclusive book on trauma therapy that exists today, and that it is! First, it is written in an organized and coherent manner. It is extraordinarily well written and engaging which is amazing for a text of this type. It contains information on just about every subject that a beginning trauma therapist as well as a well-seasoned therapist would want to know! This is an incredible book and my only criticism is that, knowing how much I shall be referring to it, it is only a paperback and I wish it were a hardcover so that it will withstand the test of time in better condition. The price is extraordinarily reasonable when one considers the cost of most textbooks these days. I highly, highly recommend this book as a MUST read for every trauma therapist, or trauma therapist in training. I cannot say enough excellent things about the Briere and Scott text. Buy it. You will not regret it for a moment! In addition, after purchasing the DSM-V, I can say that although this book was written before the DSM-V came out, it dovetails with it extremely well, and is a perfect book to purchase after getting the new DSM-V if you don't already have Principles of Trauma Therapy. It is for anyone who is a mandated reporter also, as I am. Presently, I'm a doctoral candidate in Special Education, and find that this book will be helpful there as well. As a person who has worked directly in Special Education for over 11 years, and have had professional contact with Special Needs children for over thirty years, this book is a must--for anyone who works with children, teens, (or adults who have just disclosed trauma) whether you are in Psychology or Special Education, or any allied field that makes you a mandated reporter. The book is a MUST HAVE.

About the Author
Gichin Funakoshi (1868-1957) is known throughout the world as one of karate's great masters. Born in Okinawa, he began training in karate as a child. Also educated in the Confucian classics, he became a schoolteacher early in life. In 1922, he demonstrated the then-secret Okinawan art on the Japanese mainland, which led to karate's introduction to the rest of Japan and subsequently the rest of the world. Funakoshi devoted the remainder of his life to this traditional sport and wrote several classics on the subject, including Karate-do Kyohan and an autobiography entitled Karate-do: My Way of Life.

John Teramoto, the translator, was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1950. After beginning karate training in 1963, he reached the rank of godan in 1990. Since 1998, he has served as the president of the Black Belt Council of the Shotokan Karate of America. Teramoto received a Ph. D. from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, in Japanese Art History in 1994 and is currently an Associate Curator of Asian Art at the Indianapolis Museum of Art in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Karate jutsu

I began the study of Karate in 1963 and still train 5 days per week now.This wonderful work is a window into the world of karate before the japanese and westerners twisted it for their own ends.In modern karate there is very little emphasis on throws and they are always sterile.
However,Funakoshi here gives a hint as to the karate he was taught.
Quote: "There are time when the (throwing)Technique just will not work and in order to defend oneself may have no alternative but to "swallow one's tears and resort to using ones head as a mallet"". end quote.
To any person interested in the true history of karate and who studies the art , a question.When did you last see a headbutt at a tournament?

If you've read "Karate-do Kyohan" you're gonna want this!

For those who already are familiar with Master Funakoshi's 1935 masterpiece, "Karate-do Kyohan: The Master Text" (Kyohan), this book, "Karate Jutsu" (Jutsu), should be of great interest. Originally published in 1922 under the title, "Ryukyu Kenpo Karate", this was the first book ever published on the subject of karate! Virtually every karate book subsequently written seems to have followed Funakoshi's original method of presenting instructional material step-by-step with photos and accompanying text. The translator, John Teramoto, was 13 in 1960 when he began practicing Karate under Tsutomu Ohshima (the translator of "Karate-do Kyohan"). He received a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan in Japanese Art History, is an Associate Curator of Asian Art at the Indianapolis Museum of Art, and president of the Black Belt Council of Shotokan Karate of America. His intimate knowledge and understanding of karate, his fluency in English and Japanese, and his exceptional scholarship, and his previous experience in translating "Karate-do Nyumon" into English make him the ideal translator of Jutsu. Several years ago I bought an English translation of "Karate Jutsu" titled "To-te Jitsu". Although it is a translation of the exact same Japanese text, the language is so awkward and stiff, sometimes with errors and incomplete translations that I found it virtually impossible to understand. So I appreciate the wonderful job Dr. Teramoto did with "Karate Jutsu" even more. His prose is extremely clear, readable, and sometimes even poetic! And he included a long and very helpful Translator's Introduction and almost 100 footnotes which genuinely enhanced my understanding. The original photographs of Funakoshi from the 1925 edition are reproduced, and they depict the master in his prime at about 50 years of age. It is very satisfying to see his posture and serious demeanor. The 'skeleton' of Kyohan is first published here in Jutsu. Jutsu is divided into four major sections, "The History, Value, and Methods of Karate", "The Compositional Structure of Karate", The Fundamentals and Kata of Karate", and "Additional Comments on the History and Research of Karate." The narrative portions can be read through in just a few hours time and appear to be entirely repeated and expanded in the later Kyohan. Still, there are many differences to ponder and savor. For example, it was so interesting to read that in Kehanashi (snapping kick) power is mainly placed in the standing leg while in kekomi (thrusting kick) power is mainly placed in the kicking leg as one continues to step in (not pulling back the kicking leg). Only five of the nine throws described in Kyohan are illustrated in Jutsu (some with different names) plus there's one not seen in Kyohan called Nodo-osae. There are also changes in the list of basic techniques with Jutsu describing techniques like 'inner and outer thigh kick', for example, which are absent from Kyohan. With the exception of Taikyoku kata and Ten no Kata, the forms described in Jutsu are the same ones described in Kyohan and their performance is similar but not the same. The five Pinan kata (renamed Heian kata by the time Karate-do Kyohan was published), three Naihanchi kata (later renamed Tekki), Sehshan (later renamed Hangetsu), Passai (later renamed Bassai), Wanshu (later renamed Empi), Chinto (later renamed Gankaku), Jitte (later renamed Jutte), and Jion (which has somehow managed to retain its original Okinawan title) are all described with identical counts in both Jutsu and Kyohan, but the Jutsu descriptions are generally made in less detail. Of interest are the numerous small but significant differences in the movements of these kata. One can infer something about the direction karate practice was taking between 1922 and 1935 by the changes which are apparent between Jutsu and Kyohan. I can't recommend "Karate Jutsu" highly enough. If you've studied "Karate-do Kyohan", you'll want to study "Karate Jutsu". If you don't have "Karate-do Kyohan", I suggest you get it first!

Shoto-Kan / Tang Soo Do connection

If you want to see the evolution of Okinawan Karate from Shuri-te into Shorin-Ryu, Shoto-Kan , and eventually Korean Tang Soo DO you need to have this book and also Karate-DO Kyohan. Then study Hwang Kees Two texts on Tang Soo Do vol 1 and 2 and you'll see Tang Soo Do is the Korean version of Shoto-Kan (which is nothing to be ashamed of). Even though the Koreans don't like to admit it, there's no question where Tang Soo Do's roots lie and it's not in a 2000 year old Korean art, or anything Mstr. Kee learned in China! You will also see the changes that evolved, from the High original stances of Okinawan karate (that Funakoshi was taught by Itosu), to the deeper and longer stances that later developed in shoto-kan (Karate-Do Kyohan), as well as many Shoto-isms particular to both styles such as Pinan 1 and 2 being reversed from Itosu's original order. You'll notice the single index finger knife hand blocks in Seishan Kata (which modern Shoto-kan no longer uses but Tang Soo Do still does, the commonality of the total kata and the overall simularity which is remarkable especially when Tang Soo Do's leaders and most Koreans refuse to admit it.
