Provocative, Enlightening, and Engaging

This book is an absolute MUST for any black woman (or man for that matter) who wants to deal with intergenerational scarcity beliefs which prevent us from truly experiencing love in our lives. Richardson and Wade do an excellent job of explaining how the slavery experience impacted every facet of black life and remnants of that impact are played out in our relationships with our family, friends, and mates. For instance, many of us can look back in our family tree to locate where different behavioral patterns (i.e. alcoholism, sexual abuse, obesity, etc.) developed and now play out in our own lives. The authors have you do a series of exercises, such as a genogram which lists the scarcity beliefs and self-destructive behaviors members of our families have developed and passed on to us, to help you begin to understand those internalized beliefs and behaviors which prevent us from experiencing real love. The book doesn't just focus on love relationships with mates but explores love relationships with ourselves, our family, and our mates. Personally, I found the chapter on anger to be the most provocative and enlightening. So much so that I have begun using the information I learned about my anger issues in my individual counseling sessions. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to deal with the pain of slavery and its reprecussions on our present day lives.

This book is an excellent referal to women of all races.

This book should be recommended reading for all students between junior year in high school through any year in college. Warning though: The information is factual and candid for people of average intelligence and above that can handle the truth. I highly recommend to all ages as well of different nationalities.
This seller must have a diverse personality that offers good information to all buyers. I would purchase from this seller again.

This is an excellent book and necessary for each one of us to read to better understand who we are and why we make the choices we have made and continue to make. If we want something different for our lives, this book introduces us to ways to examine the lives and choices of our mothers, grandmothers, etc., in an effort to make different choices......

About the Author

William G. Fahrenholtz, PhD, is Professor of Ceramic Engineering in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the Missouri University of Science and Technology. He has authored or co-authored more than 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and holds four U.S. patents.

Eric J. Wuchina, PhD, is currently a Senior Materials Research Engineer at the Naval Surface Warfare Center, Carderock Division and program officer in the Office of Naval Research with responsibility for ultra-high temperature materials. He has authored over 25 publications, 80 presentations (12 invited) and 4 patents.

Bill Lee, DPhil, is Professor of Ceramics, founding Director of the Centre for Advanced Structural Ceramics (CASC) and Director of the Centre for Nuclear Engineering at Imperial College London. He has over 350 publications, including 4 books for which he is lead or co-author, and has supervised 52 students to PhD completion.

Yanchun Zhou, PhD, is Deputy Director of advanced composite laboratory Aerospace Research Institute of Materials and Processing Technology. Dr. Zhou has authored or co-authored more than 300 publications in peer-reviewed journals, and holds 36 China patents.

Captivating Read

Jack Caputo does a beautiful job of presenting clearly and precisely both Derrida's own positions as well as those that are "religious." I find myself in awe of his reconciliation between deconstruction and the religious. I recommend this to anyone who has read Derrida, especially if you also enjoy Levinas. This will undoubtedly give you a new way to consider the religious.

A faithful reading is a risky reading . . .

In this exposition of Derrida's recent writings, Caputo continues his work of making the trouble-making tools of deconstruction generally available. The clarity of his presentation is matched by his playfulness. Theme by theme, he teases out the revolutionary possibilities of Derrida's "religion," freeing words and phrases from jargon and obscurity. This book offers the gift of the relevance of Derrida for "faith." Caputo's own "Edifying Divertissments" are michieviously beautiful.

Anyone out there heard of the Wholly Other?

Caputo is perhaps too academic and single-minded for the average reader, even one who knows all about differance, a word almost on every page, as the summing up of Derrida in a word. If this word is unfamiliar to you, forget this book. If you at least know that it is a neologism combining difference and differing, you still have to make your way through the critique of Levinas in the next chapter. I prefer simply to read Derrida in the original in his piece 'contra Levinas'. If this controversy is new to you, this book won't help dispel it since Caputo is hooked on deconstructing the way to the Wholly Other. Briefly Derrida tries to dissociate (the highest) choice from the usual metaphysical predicates (autonomy, consciousness) and think of it as the other's decision in me. Let's capitalize that Other. In other words, we are passive receptors of the Other's message.

He looks upon sociology as a broader and deeper subject than any of these conceptions of the past, as a subject that comprises in a related fashion these different specific phases. The plan of the book is to give the student who takes but one course in sociology a general idea of the whole science, and to give to the student who tontinues the subject a foundation for advanced work. Emphasis is placed upon those subjects that will be of greatest practical value to the student, such as immigration, the race question, the family, poverty, and crime, altho other phases of the science, such as the evolution of institutions and the general principles of social theory, are not neglected. At the end of each chapter is given a list of reading references, so that the text can be used in a one term course with a limited amount of outside reading, and in a two terms course with more extended use of collateral readings. Chapter fourteen, on education, can easily be omitted if time is limited. Because of the general nature of the text and because much of the subject matter is common property, the author has made no attempt to refer to the original source of the information given; all the leading books used will be found in the bibliography at the end. William Morris (1834-1896) was an accomplished writer, textile designer and artist. A utopian socialist, he was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and the English Arts and Craft Movement, and was a founding member of the Socialist League in Britain. Greatly influenced by the medieval period, Morris helped establish the modern fantasy genre though his works The Defence of Guenevere and Other Poems, A Dream of John Ball, and The Well at the World s End. Authors like J.R.R. Tolkien and C.S. Lewis were greatly influenced by works like The House of the Wolfings, The Roots of the Mountains, and The Wood Beyond the World. Morris was also an accomplished publisher, founding the Kelmscott Press in 1891, whose 1896 edition of the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer is considered a masterpiece of book design.

Should be required reading in English Li

Written in a simpler time and laced with prime characters speaking in rhyme, this book is an excellent conduit for attuning readers to reading and understanding older styles of prose. I would recommend this book for students before diving into Faust, Dante's Inferno, or even Joseph Conrad. Which is not to say that either the story or writing style is in the same lofty category of any of those just mentioned, but for today's reader, this book is easier to understand and follow. I believe it would serve as a good primer for more difficult reading.

I would also recommend it to anyone interested in Roman history (it shows Rome from the point-of-view of the "barbarian"); or anyone who like Tolkien.

Grand storytelling of battle, romance, and heroism

Magnificent bit of literature. I can see how (why) Tolkien took some inspiration from this as he was creating the Middle Earth lore and stories. If you enjoy/love Tolkien's works I think you will appreciate and enjoy The House of the Wolfings. Its about Germanic tribes that live in a somewhat idealistic world (somewhat alternate history though thats not at all how this was written, thankfully) in which their Houses/tribes live wonderfully combined lifestyles of wild yet civilized in a great forest until the Romans come to conquer. There is battle, heroism, magic, romance, and just wonderful story telling. Its told/written in a way that is lacking in most modern literature-as if it is mythological history (its a nice escape to think it is..). Definitely recommend this for those that love grand epic stories, fantasy, historical ficiton, or just a great escape.

Neil J. Salkind received his PhD from the University of Maryland in Human Development, and after teaching for 35 years at the University of Kansas, he remains as a Professor Emeritus in the Department of Psychology and Research in Education, where he continues to collaborate with colleagues and work with students. His early interests were in the area of children’s cognitive development, and after research in the areas of cognitive style and (what was then known as) hyperactivity, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of North Carolina’s Bush Center for Child and Family Policy. His work then changed direction and the focus was on child and family policy, specifically the impact of alternative forms of public support on various child and family outcomes. He has delivered more than 150 professional papers and presentations; written more than 100 trade and textbooks; and is the author of Statistics for People Who (Think They) Hate Statistics (Sage), Theories of Human Development (Sage), and Exploring Research (Prentice Hall). He has edited several encyclopedias, including the Encyclopedia of Human Development, the Encyclopedia of Measurement and Statistics, and the recently published Encyclopedia of Research Design. Best stats book I've read or own

I have eight stats books in my bookshelf, from Dummy's Guides to college textbooks. Salkind's text presented the material, seemingly directed toward graduate students, in the most clear and easy to understand manner of all I've read. It was actually enjoyable to read. I don't think you'll be disappointed with this one.

Great resource for beginners

This book, combined with the SPSS 13.0 CD-ROM is a great value.

The book actually covers SPSS 11.5, even though this "2nd edition" is bundled with version 13.0. There are only very minor differences anyway, so it is not really a problem. There is a great section on jumping into using SPSS for some practice analysis. Much of the book is very helpful as a general stats resource, in addition to explaining SPSS-specific application. I would highly recommend it for statistics class students, though not advanced statistics. Higher graduate-level topics such as mulivariate stats are not really covered, though foundational subjects like ANOVA and Regression do get explained. The software matches the contents well, since the bundled Student Version of SPSS 13.0 likewise does not allow for multivariate analysis.

Concise information and generally excellent editing

It's hard to write a good, concise First Amendment text - there's just too many nuanced areas of free speech law, church and state, and miscellaneous protections like expressive association. But Chopper does a pretty good job of covering what he wants to cover and also covering all that those areas need covered.

First, the cases are well-edited and deliver the essential information in the cases. There have been many times where I've gone to read the rest of the case, but that's because -as someone who likes to write on the topic- I'm more interested in the full versions than a short version. But often, the core of the case holdings are in the textbook effectively, which is what I think most comprehensive law school classes are aiming for.

Second, the book is pretty good (though not perfect) at avoiding bombarding the reader with questions to promote thought on various topics ("Should the First Amendment protect [insert difficult item here]?"). Generally, I've found that law students just don't have time to stop and contemplate all the questions that text book "notes and comments" sections ask. Other books certainly take this too far, but Choper does well in keeping it pretty reduced.

Finally, the case selection is generally excellent. I haven't yet encountered any sections that are lacking a foundational case. Sometimes cases are given only footnote or comments and notes status, but again, in First Amendment law that may be inevitable (unless you want to do a multi-volume set).

All in all, a pretty good book and review of the applicable law. First Amendment litigants or those specializing in First Amendment law will obviously need to read beyond the pages of this book.

Some poor editorial choices

The case selection and organization are generally good. Two major issues, though, will prevent me from using this text in my class again.
First, the notes tend to antagonize the reader by raising difficult hypothetical questions and writing "see such-and-such a case or article." I'm not quibbling with the Socratic method here. There is a place for open-ended hypotheticals that invite the reader to deduce conclusions from existing knowledge. But that kind of deduction is largely impossible in an area as inconsistent as the First Amendment. Raising these questions and giving the reader citations without more tends to come off as a game of "I know something you don't know." Very few students - or professors! - would follow up on very many of these cites, and most, I imagine, would come to resent the editors for playing coy.
Second, the book's use of short-form citations requires even an attentive reader to do a lot of unnecessary backtracking. For instance, /Ward v. Rock Against Racism/ - typically referred to as "Rock Against Racism" for obvious reasons - is at one point referred to over twenty pages later as /Ward/, with no "see supra at __" to guide the reader. And that's not close to the most egregious example. At least once, I found a short-form citation in one of the main opinions, and spent a good ten minutes thumbing through the book to find the full cite buried in a footnote many pages earlier. And when I did find the full cite, there was no accompanying discussion. The effort was wasted.
The result of these shortfalls, needless to say, is to deter students from reading notes and paying attention to the Court's handling of precedent.

what you would expect from a text book

This book is very good at editing the cases to give you only the parts of the opinions that you need. On the other hand, the comments are often useless as they only pose question after question for about half a page rather than offering any useful insight into the materials.
