This is what literature is about

This novel by Eduardo Lalo reminds me why I studied Literature. It reminds me that literature is supposed to represent something: the time, culture, the struggles, idiosyncrasies, ideals. Not necessarily to teach, but to show, illuminate. It is the difference between reading for mere pleasure and reading to be enlightened. With this novel Eduardo Lalo shows us what it is to be anonymous in the place that you live, be it by the force of circumstances or by your own free will. Sometimes one can't distinguish between them.
Esta novela de Eduardo Lalo me acuerda por qué estudié literatura. Me acuerda que la literature debe representar algo: el tiempo, la cultura, las luchas, las idiosincracias, los ideales. No para enseñar necesariamente, sino para mostrar, iluminar. Es la diferencia entre leer por mero placer y leer para ser iluminado. Con esta novela, Eduardo Lalo nos muestra lo que es ser anónimo en el lugar donde se vive, sea por fuerza de circumstancias o por voluntad propia. The books description of the city and its ambiance made me, as a native from San Juan, relive every moment described in it. The plot keeps one guessing all the time and the love story, although unusual,is handle masterly. A very enjoyable book, one that once begun cannot be put aside.

Now as then a cultural curiosity, the resurrected reminiscences of 1920s Latin Quarter model "Kiki" appear with the original prefaces by artist Tsuguharu Foujita and Ernest Hemingway, the latter of whom described her as "a woman who was never a lady at any time." The French edition was released in 1929; an English translation was denied entry by U.S. customs the next year on grounds of obscenity, owing to the reproductions of paintings by Foujita and photographs by Man Ray that accompanied the slim text. An illegitimate village waif raised in poverty by her grandmother, Alice Prin was born in 1901. At 12 she joined her mother in Paris only to go off on her own at 14 as model for, then mistress to, a generation of sculptors, painters and photographers. Merely an amateur at more professional entertainment, she nevertheless sang in sleazy clubs, appeared in nine films, danced in Fernand Leger's Ballet Mecanique. Offered freely, her svelte body brought her fame without fortune. When journalist Henri Brocca arranged for publication of her memoir, and news spread that for 30 francs, one could acquire an autographed book and a kiss from Kiki, men discarded their dignity in the rush. Once depression and war put an end to her brand of frivolity, she contended that all she required was "an onion, a bit of bread, and a bottle of red," and she usually found "somebody to offer me that." Nearly forgotten, she survived into 1951. Putnam's 1930 translation evokes Kiki's childlike qualities. Insubstantial despite the prefaces, dozens of illustrations, including the author's own naif pictures, and?as supplement?three autobiographical articles for a Paris paper in 1950 that repeat much of the memoir, Kiki's offering is more artifact than art. Kluver and Martin are the coauthors of Kiki's Paris.

Souvenirs of Kiki's Memoirs

Being a veritable Kiki virgin before I read this book, I found Kiki's Memoirs more than helpful in showing the atmosphere of 1920's Paris. I did, however, agree with Ernest Hemingway's sentiments from his introdution-it is impossible to translate Kiki's words very well. It seems like Samuel Putnam was unable to get more than four sentences out without putting in an exclamation mark. This breaks the narrative up considerably. I would have given this book three stars, but I loved the Man Ray photos in it. The real strength of this book lies in the artwork.

His nonlinear, multifaceted writing not only reflects the fragmentations of memory induced by traumas of racism, forced removal, and imprisonment but also can be read as a bold personal response to the impossible conditions he and other Nisei faced throughout their lifetimes.

This is a beautiful book sensitively written about a quiet, shy man's experience during World War ll and the effect being sent to Japanese relocation camp had on his life. It is an insightful story sharing this terrible experience with others. I strongly recommend it.

I was unfamiliar with Jane Mai's work, but read an intriguing review for this book on the AV Club. I couldn't put this book down. Mai's thoughtfully illustrated diary entries alternate between hilarious and touching. Really excellent autobio comics.

David Zientara is a software engineer and IT professional living in northern New Jersey. He has 20 years of experience in IT and has been an enthusiastic supporter of the free and open source software (FOSS) community throughout his career, beginning with his first foray into the open source world with Slackware Linux in 1995. In the mid-1990s, David became lead software engineer for Oxberry LLC, a digital imaging company headquartered in New Jersey. In this capacity, he played a major role in developing a new software package for the company's film scanners for Windows while also helping maintain Oxberry's legacy software, which had been developed for the SGI IRIX platform. He continued in this role for many years and continues to play a part in software development for Oxberry's corporate successor. In the mid-2000s, David took an interest in computer networking, an interest that led him to learn about m0n0wall and, eventually, pfSense, a fork of the m0n0wall project.
