Limited Scope
By R. Myers
I purchased this Cisco Press book at Cisco's recommendation for the ICND1 and ICND2 exam. I then purchased Cisco's preparation exams, and found that the Exam goes into far more depth than the book covers. Either the practice exam is not scaled to the book and the true exam, or this book is poorly written. Either way, I feel disappointed.

Craniosacral Chi Kung: Integrating Body and Emotion in the Cosmic Flow, by Mantak Chia, Joyce Thom

Craniosacral therapy and Chi Kung practices to harmonize emotions, release chronic tensions, and optimize the flow of energy

• Provides illustrated instructions for movement exercises, breathwork, self-massage, and emotional intelligence meditations to free the flow of energy in the body

• Reveals clear parallels between the craniosacral rhythm and the flow of chi

• Explains how to release energetic blockages and emotional and physiological knots, activate the energetic pumps of the 3 tan tiens, and tap in to the Cosmic Flow

Exploring the connections between Western craniosacral therapy and Chi Kung, Taoist master Mantak Chia and craniosacral instructor Joyce Thom detail movement exercises, breathwork practices, self-massage techniques, and focused meditations from Taoist and other wisdom traditions to release and harmonize the flow of energy in the body and optimize our potential for physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being.

The authors link the craniosacral rhythm--the gentle flow of cerebrospinal fluid from the head (cranium) to the tailbone (sacrum)--and the flow of chi throughout the body, circulated by the pumps of the three tan tiens. They explain how these subtle energetic flows indicate the harmony or disharmony of the whole person and are greatly affected by physical traumas, chronic tensions, and unresolved emotions. For example, the psoas muscle, known in Taoism as the muscle of the Soul, connects the spine to the legs and is the first muscle to contract when anger or fear triggers our fight-or-flight response. Often a storehouse of subconscious stressors, this muscle’s sensitivity is connected to many common ailments like back pain.

Providing step-by-step illustrated exercise instructions, the authors explain how to identify and unwind energetic blockages and emotional and physiological knots. They explore emotional intelligence exercises for tuning in to our hearts so we can listen to our bodies’ messages and learn to relieve related emotional burdens. They also reveal how to activate the cranial, respiratory/cardiac, and sacral pumps of the three tan tiens to optimize the body’s energetic flow and explain how, when our energy is flowing freely, we can enter the Cosmic Flow--a state of calm well-being and extraordinary creativity where we find ourselves truly at one with the universe.

Balancing Emotional and Mental Flow

BALANCING THE EMOTIONAL FLOW

Psoas Muscle: Muscle of the Soul

The psoas muscle connects our spine to our legs. On the spine, it spans from thoracic vertebra 12 (T12) to lumbar vertebra 5 (L5) and then descends through the pelvic region to attach to the top of the femur (thighbone). This important muscle enables us to lift our legs and therefore affects our structural balance, our ability to move our pelvis, the range of motion of our legs, and the way we walk. In addition to stabilizing our spine, the psoas influences our flexibility, strength, joint mobility, and organs.

Because the psoas is directly connected to the spinal cord and the reptilian part of our brain through the fascia, it is often the first muscle to contract and the last to release when we experience anger or fear and our system moves into instinctive fight-or-flight reactions. When we are surprised, it is the rapid contraction of the psoas that causes us to startle. The psoas is also activated when we reflexively curl up into a fetal position when stressed.

Because the psoas is so closely connected to our instinctual survival reactions and because of its deep location in the body, many people store unresolved emotions or unhealed traumas there. When we feel criticized (by others or by ourselves), it is often the psoas that reacts by contracting or hardening and becoming rigid. Taoists refer to the psoas as the muscle of the soul because of its connection to our deepest essence and core identity.

Benefits of releasing the psoas include improved oxygen, blood, and lymph circulation and detoxification as the stress hormones stored in the tissues dissipate. As flow increases, we can experience improved range of physical motion and greater emotional mobility as well.

Relaxing the Psoas Muscle

The psoas is particularly reactive to fear, anxiety, and anger. When we experience those emotions, the psoas contracts. Because the upper attachments of the psoas are in the same region as the diaphragm, contraction in the psoas affects the diaphragm and causes shallow breathing.

By consciously deepening and lengthening our breathing, we relax tension in our diaphragm and release the psoas. As the psoas relaxes and tension dissolves, our emotional blockages begin to melt and dissolve as well.

Yin Breathing

Strong emotional reactions are associated with erratic or strained breath patterns. Natural breathing evens out emotional swings by retraining our nervous system to relax and by quieting the mind. Yin breathing extends this beneficial process even further, not only because it assists us in releasing psoas tension and the emotions held there but also because the meditative state that it induces helps to rebalance our emotions as well.

1. Find a comfortable position either sitting or lying.

2. Align your body so your head is in alignment with your heart and your hips.

3. Take a snapshot of how you feel physically, emotionally, and mentally.

4. Begin natural breathing, inhaling and exhaling through your nose.

5. In this exercise we will breathe into the solar plexus area to relax the psoas.

6. Notice your inhale and exhale.

7. Invite your breath to deepen and slow, becoming smoother and more even.

8. Slowly begin to lengthen your exhale until it is twice the length of your inhale.

9. Continue slowing your breath until your inhale is around 7 seconds and your exhale is around 14 seconds.

10. Do nine rounds and then allow your breathing to return to normal.

11. Notice how you feel and what has changed.

Psoas Muscle Release

This exercise provides another opportunity to release the psoas and increase the flow of the emotions that may have accumulated there.
For this exercise it may be helpful to have a chair nearby or to work near a wall to provide stability.

1. To warm up our hip joints, we will start by sitting cross-legged.

2. Keeping your back straight, make small circles of your torso in a clockwise direction.

3. Rotate 18 times, slowly increasing the size of the circle.

4. Reverse and rotate 18 times in a counterclockwise direction. Start with small circles and increase the circles gradually.

5. Now, come to a runner’s lunge with the front knee over the ankle and the back knee resting on the floor. (If you are on a hard floor, place a towel or yoga mat underneath to provide some cushioning for your knee.)

6. The focus is on stretching and opening the psoas in your back leg.To do so, your back knee should be behind your hips. Keep your spine upright with your head aligned directly over your hips.

7. Once you have found the position, breathe. Smile into your psoas and invite it to relax.

8. As you settle into this position, you will notice layers of tension in the various muscles peeling away like layers of an onion.

9. Notice any tension you are holding in your pelvis and invite it to relax as well.

10. Listen to your psoas. Notice what thoughts or emotions or physical sensations come up as you hold this position.

11. Use the chair or the wall to stabilize yourself, if necessary, so you can sink deeper.

12. Allow your awareness to drop deep into the muscle. Follow the tension to the deep core of the muscle and smile into the area of tension that is blocking flow. Sense it softening. As it does so, the muscle may start unwinding and shaking. Rather than tensing up to stop that shaking, soften. Relax into the movement and let the waves of energy move through your body, releasing both local and general restrictions.

13. If possible, stay in this position for 5 minutes. Keep coming back to your breath, the invitation to relax, and the inner smile you are beaming to the psoas. If necessary, take breaks and return to the position.

14. Once you are done, repeat on the other side

Got flow? You will after reading this book!
By DIY
I love the way CranioSacral Chi Kung ties together Eastern (Taoism, QiGong, & Chinese Medicine) and Western (CranioSacral) approaches to mind body medicine. The concepts are presented simply and clearly and the abundance of practical exercises were useful and easy to follow. After doing just a few of them for a week, I noticed significantly more energy and "flow" on every level. And who can't use more flow? I appreciate how well the authors took such complex subjects and explained them in ways that everyone can understand. I've studied qigong before and received great new insights that will definitely deepen my practice. I can see how the exercises would be useful for healing practitioners to offer to their clients for self-care in between sessions. Very happy to have found this valuable resource!

Practical and Easy to Do
By sooze
Practical techniques. I find less back and neck tension doing the cranial pump, sacral pump and spinal cord breathing techniques. Easy to follow instructions. I recommend taking it slow, doing one technique until you are comfortable with it, then adding another. Currently, I am on about 1/3 of the way through the book. Enjoying it immensely!

Discover the scintillating new novel from the bestselling author of Pictures of Lily and The Longest Holiday!

A year ago, Bronte left Sydney for a wedding in England, where she met newly single Alex. After one amazing night together they parted ways.

Now working on the picture desk for a glassy magazine in London, Bronte is about to meet a new colleague - who turns out to be all too familiar. Alex is now engaged, but the memory of the spark they felt when they met hasn't died. As Alex's wedding day looms, it is clear that he and Bronte have unfinished business...

A sparkling, feel-good read for fans of Lindsey Kelk and Kirsty Greenwood.

3.5 stars for a fantastic book with a terrible ending
By Vox Libris
Perhaps my biggest pet peeve as a reader is when I invest myself emotionally and in a book - when I give it all of my time and attention - only to experience the main character betray herself at the end. It feels disingenuous, like I've taken part in a lie.

Such is my problem with this book.

The first three quarters - the first four fifths, for goodness sake - is fantastic. Bronte comes to London for a hen night, meets the gorgeous and alluring Alex, and they rock the headboard. She goes back home to Australia, he heads back to his life, and all's right. Each has recently broken up with a significant other, they provide succor and sex to one another, and they have given themselves some hot memories.

A year and a half later, Bronte is in London for a new job. Joining her, equally new to the company, is Alex. Neither can forget the passion and chemistry they shared, but now there is a teensy little problem: Alex is engaged to the girl from whom he was broken up when he and Bronte got together the first time.

The thing is, their attraction to each other is just as strong as it was when they met in the bar. Their attempts to fight it off only seem to strengthen it. Sure, Alex has a fianceé, and Bronte soon has a boyfriend of sorts in Lachie, a fellow Aussie who has come to England as a sort of budding wedding singer. Lachie is every bit as hot as Alex is, and he cares deeply for Bronte. But her heart belongs to Alex.

The thirteen weddings are those at which Bronte works as a photographer. If you're interested in the nuances of wedding photography, this is the book for you. Each of those weddings - Each. One . - is detailed and discussed, sometimes to the detriment of the story's pacing. You'll be on a roll with Bronte and Alex, and then you're at a wedding.

Bronte, Alex, and Lachie are an entertaining threesome. Bronte has a sweetness to her, but also a sharp edge. A childhood experience scarred and scared her away from religion and marriage, but she is willing to open her heart to Alex and Lachie. It's in there - her hope in love and fidelity - but she has to trust herself before she's willing to tear down the obstacles she faces.

Alex is presented as an honorable guy. He's engaged to a woman he's been with for ages, and he feels tremendous loyalty to her. Yet she has become an obligation and not a life partner, even if Alex clings to closely to duty to see it. Lachie, on the other hand, is a traveling troubadour of sorts. He's fun, and he's interested, and he's the salve to Bronte's torn heart and ego.

Does she use him? I think she does. She's given her heart to someone else, and as much as Lachie gives to her, she takes, even when it appears she is giving in return.

The ending ... well, I won't say anything because you need to read the book. But the ending ANNOYED THE HELL OUT OF ME. It isn't that I expect hearts, roses, and happy Hollywood endings. But I do expect that the ending will remain true to the characters I've enjoyed. And this ending seemed to smack that loyalty and disregard it completely.

Read it, come back, and hit me up in the comments. I'd love to know what you think. I'd also have loved to give this five stars, but the ending left me angry.

Thought it would be a sweet and fluffy romance, but got instead a very strong and bittersweet story. Truly amazing
By love and stolen kisses
The book begins with Bronte meeting Alex in a Club, each of them on hen/stag night. Both of them are newly single. They connect instantly, and ends up having a one night stand. One year forward they meet again. Even though it was only meant to be a one-night stand, Bronte never forgot Alex, and it doesn't seem that Alex forgot about Bronte neither, but this time he's about to get married to the girlfriend he was on a break from, when he met Bronte. Working together with Alex every single day is difficult for Bronte.
The whole situation with Alex is one big mess, and even though it's a big part of her life, I loved that the story is not centered about them getting together or not, because there is something there is much more present in her life, which is figuring out how to deal with something that happened in the past. She can't move forward alone or with anyone before she has accepted/forgiven her past.

I really like Bronte. She's a woman that's not scared of following her ambitions. She's very straight forward, and not a shy person..... but there is also this secret side to her. She's very affected by something that happened in her past, and it make her sound very cynical about love at times. She's not a big fan of weddings. Doesn't believe in marriage or god - imagine being a wedding photographer then?
It brought something to her character everytime she witnessed a wedding through her lens, and she grows through the book.

I've read all of Paige's books, and is a big fan of hers, so obviously you might not take my words for something, but I truly think this is the best she has ever written.
I did the mistake of thinking this would be a sweet and fluffy romance with weddings, but what I got instead was a very strong, and bittersweet story.

There were times were I thought, wow this is much darker than what she use to write, but somehow the tone in the book is still kept very light. Bronte's friends brought a lot of light to the novel. Lachie especially, who is a fellow aussie and wedding singer. He's a warm person, and to quote Paige "This boy has more confidence than Johnny frigging Jefferson." LOL. He's really great. The ladies thinks so too ;)

I love the way Paige write. She has this talent for setting a mood, and place with very few words. Making her heroines warm, funny and strong women. I love that these women are someone you can look up to.

There were many great surprices in this book, and I can't really tell you more without giving anything away.
But know this, this story brought just as many laugh as it did tears.

A great book - no, that doesn't even cover it - An amazing book.

BRILLIANT!!!
By Simona Elena
Yay! I was screaming and dancing around when this book arrived one day before pub date. As soon as I finished the book I was reading I started with this one. Paige Toon is one of my favourite authors and I just love her writing, so I was really curious about it.

The story follows Bronte, if you already read Pictures of Lily by Paige Toon you might recognize her. It all starts at a hen night where Bronte meets gorgeous Alex and they share a night of passion, then she leaves for Australia again, where she lives.
One and a half years later she’s back in the UK, working there for a year. It turns out that Alex works at the same place and they meet again, their chemistry and connection is sparkling again, but Alex is engaged now.
That makes everything really weird and uncomfortable for both of them. Bronte is really confused.

Through a friend Bronte gets the possibility to be a photographer at weddings and she really likes it. At a wedding she meets Lachie, an Australian musician, and they become great friends, she is also very attracted to him, but there is still Alex.

Bronte has a great group of friends and I loved reading about Bridget again (remember her from The Longest Holiday?!). They meet regularly at the pub and have lots of fun. Sometimes they also accompany Bronte to weddings.
Alex is really weird sometimes; asking Bronte weird stuff and their night comes up several times. At a wedding of two of their friends they get closer and share a passionate kiss. That makes Alex ignore her for several weeks, but Bronte knows that she is in love with him. It only get weirder when she meets his fiancé.

There is Lachie as well and he’s flirting with her all the time. She likes him a lot, which only makes her feelings more confusing. She is torn between two man, not able to be with one and not wanting to hurt the other one. I really felt with her and just wanted her to find her true love. From time to time she suffered from bad dreams, connected to her childhood, we only find out towards the end, what it was all about. Lachie was there for her all the time and so caring. I really wasn’t sure whether to be on team Alex or Team Lachie, I liked them both, both definitely have book boyfriend potential. Eventually Lachie and Bronte get closer.
Wedding #13 is Alex’s wedding and Bronte has to be there and take pictures, is that really a good idea? Everything gets really interesting from this point forward, with a lot of drama, I couldn’t put the book down!!!

As a reader you really don’t know, who she’s going to pick in the end or whether Alex marries his fiancé. At a moment a got really angry with Alex, because he didn’t seem to realise the truth, only when it was too late. I have to say I was probably more on Team Alex. Bronte made her own choice and I really loved the ending. We also get to hear about older Paige Toon characters again. Not only in the end, but also in between. So Joe Strike and Lily fans, keep your eyes open. I was so happy with the news and it put a real big smile on my face.

The book also covers the topic of friendship and being there for friends and the topic of alcoholism. Covering difficult topics and still find a heart warming and cute style to write is just BRILLIANT!!! Bronte’s past is also present all the time and I loved the way Paige put this all into one story. Her writing is so gripping, dramatic, romantic, sweet, compelling…

The Thirteen Weddings were great to read about and all so different. Bronte is a warm and passionate character and her feelings really came through during the whole story.

This book actually calls for more of Bronte!! I say that after all the Paige Toon books, because she creates wonderful characters and still wanna be part of their story. It’s great that the books are all somehow connected. I also think that it’s time for Bridget to have her own story!!!

AMAZING!!! I was able to dive into the story and be a part of it. ♥♥♥

Accurate Historical Document
By Ms. Nice Person
Just because the author is not scholarly or technical, does not mean the information is inaccurate. Christianity is blatantly tainted with the paganism from the culture in which it developed. The blending of paganism and Christianity was a political and power move on the parts of Roman Emperor Constantine and the Roman church.

Many years ago, I began to notice discrepancies between the "Old Testament" and the "New Testament". I began to search and study. I studied pseudepigraphal writings, the Apocrypha, Roman and Greek mythology, and various other writings. Most importantly, I learned to read Hebrew because I wanted to know for myself what the Scriptures were saying.

One of the discrepancies I discovered is in Psalm 22 in which the word "pierced" was mistranslated and interpolated into the Christian Bible to depict the crucifixion of Jesus. The phrase "pierced were my hands and feet" was placed into Psalm 22. The word "pierced" simply does not appear in Psalm 22. This psalm has NOTHING to do with Jesus Christ.

Furthermore, in Isaiah 7, the Hebrew word "almah" literally means a young woman (review reference #5959 in the Strong's Concordance). The Hebrew word "almah" does not mean virgin. Christian scribes translated the Hebrew word "almah" into the Greek word, "parthenos" which means virgin. Roman and Greek mythology declare various demi-gods were born to virgin women. Christianity just plagarized the same theme for the Jesus Christ birth story. I went through the Hebrew Scriptures line by line and compared it with the Christian Scriptures. I saw for myself that the prophecies people pointed to in the Hebrew Scriptures do NOT make any references to Jesus Christ at all. It simply is not there.

And of course, I researched information on how Emperor Constantine in the fourth century changed the Sabbath from Saturday to Sunday on March 7, 321 CE; I researched what happened at the Council of Nicea in the year 325 CE when Jesus was "deified" as God; and I researched details about the pagan Saturnalia and Mithra holidays celebrated on December 25th hundreds of years before the birth of Jesus Christ. These holidays were also part of the winter solstice celebrations. Pagan holidays like Christmas and Easter simply took took on "Christianized" names so the Christians and pagns could celebrate harmoniously.

Nowhere in the Bible does it tells us to celebrate Christmas or Easter. Instead, we are told to celebrate the Passover, Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur and even Chanukkah. According to the New Testament, Jesus celebrated Chanukkah, which was also called the Feast of Dedication (see John 10:22).

Hundreds of thousands of Christians would be horrified if they really knew the pagan origins of Christianity. However, there are many ministries that are beginning to tell their members not to celebrate Christmas and Easter. Good, that's a start. There are too many similiarities between Jesus Christ and the Roman/Greek mythological gods.

Elementary in his presentation
By Dan M. Curtis
I was very much anticipating the receipt of this work, because I was looking for critical evidence of the influence of Paganism in Christianity. Although there are references he uses, many of his thoughts, it seems, are just his beliefs stated with minimal or no support. Now I don't disagree with most of what he had to say but in many areas he must assume that support or an extended explanation is not needed. In many ways it reminds me of the writings of a non-professional parishioner discussing his non-orthodox beliefs written down for others to read rather than a scientific textual critique of the subjects. I wanted more extensive justification of how or why such and such might have ended up the way it was. He needed to make a case for much of what he talked about, but he did not. This would not be a work that a critical thinker could use to raise doubt in the mind of orthodoxy.

Origin of the Trinity doctrine
By blondeMatrix
It's great to discover some authors brave enough to write about the true origin of certain beliefs generally held to be Christian.

Commencing with the second century it appears that certain theologians chose not to take scripture at face value, but rather sought to describe salvation in complex philosophical terms (predominantly platonic). Athanasius could not accept that Jesus Christ was simply the "Son of God", for fear that that implied Jesus had the freedom (like angels and humans) to exercise free will, and could potentially change his mind (about saving us). No, Jesus must become God with the Father. But ditheism (belief in two gods) was contrary to Hebrew scripture (God was one). Consequently, multiple philosophical theories were hypothesized in an attempt to blend both monotheism and, eventually, tritheism - a mathematical impossibility. Trinitarianism was born, and destined to become a complicated, drawn out, and ultimately a violent affair.

The good news of God's kingdom, salvation from death and sin inherited from Adam, and other scriptural truths had an intended audience: common people like Jesus' disciples and us. Jesus Christ is the way and the truth and the life. Not theologians, those educated in secular philosophy, and certainly not pagan Roman Emperors like Constantine and Theodosius. If the true nature of God is of trinity, Jesus would have explicitly revealed this to us. He did not. Instead, the Trinity was formulated over several centuries, and at a cost of much blood.

Moreover, the Trinity is a THEORY of many differing flavours. It is an ELABORATION on scripture. For the followers of one particular flavour to label all others as heretics worthy of persecution reveals the true nature of this doctrine.

"For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths." 2 Timothy 4:3-4 (New International Version)

Chris.

Shadowdemon: Tarnished Sterling, Book 2, by Robert McCarroll

Remaining in the hero life had been a difficult decision for Travis Colfax. He's managed, so far, to juggle the demands of his team with the usual daily stress. His inner demons, however, are becoming more vocal.

Struggling to catch the remaining Morlocks in New Port Arthur is difficult enough, but the ill wind blowing in threatens to grow into a maelstrom of problems.

Travis' brother's return from the West Coast is initially a cause for celebration, though he speaks of corruption within the hero community. Someone is setting off bombs in the city, creating more chaos. And as something dark starts to conduct swift and brutal attacks on the team in the dead of night, the strain on Travis begins to unravel his poise.

Then there is the one last question: what is Firegod?

Sophomore slump?
By Jim Stenberg
I really wanted to like this book - I loved "Shadowboy" - but I came away disappointed. The plot is a mess, relying on implausible coincidences and on information delivered ex machina. Oh, and people acting stupidly. I can't be more specific without spoilers - however most of the other points in this review (about Travis's character, etc.) can be made on the basis of material in the first book. As a character study of Travis Colfax it is still pretty good, and the ethical issues raised are engaging. There is lots of action and the dialogue is good. Still, Shadowboy was way better.

(Spoilers for Shadowboy follow.)

Travis Colfax, the lone unpowered member of a superpowered family, copes with feelings of inadequacy. And he has survivor's guilt from having witnessed the murder of his mother and brother. Add in some horrific experiences from book one, and it's a wonder he is functional. Oh, and he is also exploited - all but enslaved - by the Community Fund system. He works basically for nothing since his mandatory insurance payments are so high. Less than nothing, really, since the Community Fund credits that pay for his insurance are apparently taxable income. And of course you can't pay your taxes with Community Fund credits. It's enough to make someone a morlock!

This is all in the first book, though the same picture is presented in the second. The first book also details the progress Travis makes with keeping up with powered individuals. He gets a glove that makes force bubbles, and a nifty bionic eye, and he loses the ability to sleep. The forced insomnia is awful in some ways (anesthesia doesn't work on him) but at least it lets him study at all hours, and makes him resistant to effects that would make a normal person pass out. Moreover, there is a strong hint in the first book that Travis does in fact have superpowers. (I was guessing Survival, maybe with Bad Luck as a secondary power.)

And how does Shadowdemon advance our understanding of Travis's situation? Well, we finally learn why he has the biological markers for superpowers without manifesting any abilities, but... no I can't talk about it without spoilers. I just found it pretty lame. Psychologically, he is barely functional. He finally recognizes the problem at the end of the book, and there is hope of future healing, but really he hasn't advanced a lot beyond the first book. Nikki Greeler is still hanging around - Travis is being awfully unfair to her, considering everyone else's behavior.

Book two really just makes more explicit what we could have figured out from book one. Travis doesn't really learn anything new. I mean, surely he knows about survivor's guilt, doesn't he? And knows he suffers from it? And did he ever think how it would feel to actually have superpowers? As an unpowered 11-year-old, there was nothing he could have done about the murder of his mother and brother. But if it turned that that he had powers after all, then it would have been his fault that they died. (Well, not really, but that's how he would feel.)

So Travis in a bad place either way: unpowered, he thinks he is holding the team back, but having powers would devastate him. Given that the Community Fund basically devalues him as a person (apparently being a superhero is only worth minimum wage), he has the weight of the world to bear, and it is grinding his self-esteem down to nothing. Naturally he makes some mistakes - who wouldn't, suffering under such an intolerable burden? - and equally naturally he is punished for those mistakes. Even when they are clearly not his fault. I can understand Travis wanting to take the blame, but his team shouldn't be so quick to punish!

Travis has doubts about the way the superhero community functions, but it is based on rather abstract concerns about "civil rights violations". I presume he means the right to privacy, and the right to not be subject to arbitrary search and seizure. Superheroes are, after all, kind of casual about breaking in and spying on people, and taking their stuff. However we never see any sympathetic characters suffer from these civil rights violations. They are either villainous types (like the Greelers) or else the violations take place safely off-screen. But Travis is much quicker to stand up for others than for himself, so maybe this is the only way he can recognize the problem with the Community Fund system.

There are a couple of typos and editorial lapses in the book. For instance, there is a mysterious conversation involving "Drake" that confused me. An episode that was deleted from the final draft, perhaps? And Travis's force bubble is described as being impenetrable to sound and heat when it is the opposite that is meant. Travis is an unreliable narrator: sometimes I couldn't be sure if a character really was being (say) mocking, or if it was just Travis's perception. The way the dialogue is written, I am not always sure what is intended.

Anyway, I'm not sorry I purchased the book, but I really hope this is just a sophomore slump and that book three will return to the standard of excellence set by book one. I'll certainly buy it!

Not as Focused Or Enjoyable As Book 1
By Art
The first book in this series was a bit of a coming of age story, and included time getting to know multiple young heroes. This provided a solid framework for the story, with the main character's (Travis) struggle to "live the life" of a superhero when he (seemingly) has no powers providing depth.

The second book entirely lacks this framework, and suffers for it. Instead, we get a confusing jumble of missions, connected by a weakly over-arching plot, and part 2 of Travis' struggles with himself. In book 1, the alien surgeon told him he looked like a powered, and Travis basically ignored it. In book 2, when confronted with evidence that he may have died for 90 minutes, Travis realizes that he probably does have powers but "doesn't want to think about it," and instead goes catatonic for 36 hours, leading his father to put him in therapy. Travis then proceeds to largely ignore some rather serious problems that he should know are caused by his possible powers. You don't need to be a psychologist to figure out what is going on with Travis, but I won't spoil it.

The problem here is not the Travis plot's believability -- its actually quite logical given Travis' history. Rather, the problem is that its so slow to develop, and not all that much fun to read about. The therapist asks Travis what he wants to be doing instead of therapy -- and Travis has no idea, because he realizes he has zero life, apart from hero work. This doesn't really change in book 2 -- late in book 2 Travis is still muddling around, with no idea what is going on. Or rather, he says that he knows "in the back of his mind" but "doesn't want to deal with it." Worse still, when Travis does realize what is going on, he solves the problem himself, quickly, and way to easily, without fully confronting the issues that led to the problem. So perhaps we will see still more of his inner struggle in book 3, which I find unfortunate.

The rest of the plot (plots actually) are, although chaotic, a bit dull or routine in the final analysis. Although they are a bit of a confusing jumble for most of the book, most of the side plots end up revolving around a pissed off former hero turning rogue (for routine reasons) and wanting to blow up a building (or a bunch) & kill some heroes. To make matters worse, there are a few side plots that are entirely pointless. For example, Travis and his friends get hit by a car. Over the course of a few pages scattered throughout the book, we learn this was a non-powered attempt to murder a love-rival -- i.e. something having nothing to do with them or their role as powered heroes. Travis and his friends don't actually solve this murder -- they get close, but get busy, and the police end up solving it. So its just filler, and its not alone.

Conclusion: Shadowdemon suffers from the lack of a solid framework, pairing Travis' inner struggles with several routine and/or pointless side-plots. As a result, book 2 is simply not as enjoyable as book 1. Nonetheless, Mr. McCarroll can write, and there is certainly hope that he can return to form in book 3. Leaving Travis' inner struggles behind would be a good start.

The hero we need, the hero we deserve.
By J. Gilmore
Shadowdemon is all that I could have asked for in a sequel. McCarroll's superhero universe is grounded in a world where heroes are as concerned with paying their taxes as they are with fighting crime, yet at the same time is fanciful enough to have shape shifting dragon men, magic wielders, and good old fashioned hero vs. hero throwdowns.
Shadowdemon is a world weary super team leader, he's seen and done it all, and had it all done to him, yet he's still just a teen. This is a great continuation of the story of a non powered hero trying to fit into a world where people can throw tanks and run at the speed of sound. Travis the Shadowdemon is neurotic full of doubt and slightly self destructive, but he's the most engaging hero I've read this side of Spiderman.
This is what comics should be like, funny, introspective, creative and as exciting as heck. He's not a sidekick, Shadowdemon is the real deal.

Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes and How to Correct Them: Lessons from the Life-Changing Science of Behavioral Economics, by Gary

Protect and grow your finances with help from this definitive and practical guide to behavioral economics—revised and updated to reflect new economic realities.

In their fascinating investigation of the ways we handle money, Gary Belsky and Thomas Gilovich reveal the psychological forces—the patterns of thinking and decision making—behind seemingly irrational behavior. They explain why so many otherwise savvy people make foolish financial choices: why investors are too quick to sell winning stocks and too slow to sell losing shares, why home sellers leave money on the table and home buyers don’t get the biggest bang for their buck, why borrowers pay too much credit card interest and savers can’t sock away as much as they’d like, and why so many of us can’t control our spending. Focusing on the decisions we make every day, Belsky and Gilovich provide invaluable guidance for avoiding the financial faux pas that can cost thousands of dollars each year.

Filled with fresh insight; practical advice; and lively, illustrative anecdotes, this book gives you the tools you need to harness the powerful science of behavioral economics in any financial environment.

"Great stuff. Fresh and helpful." -- BusinessWeek

"This very helpful book is aimed at the novice and the expert, and you come away from it somewhat chastened by your own financial mistakes, but hopeful that you might learn a thing or two about holding onto your hard-earned cash. The authors don't offer simplistic solutions, but hard facts and sound advice."

CHAPTER 1

NOT ALL DOLLARS ARE CREATED EQUAL

By the third day of their honeymoon in Las Vegas, the newlyweds had lost their $1,000 gambling allowance. That night in bed, the groom noticed a glowing object on the dresser. Upon closer inspection, he realized it was a $5 chip they had saved as a souvenir. Strangely, the number 17 was flashing on the chip's face. Taking this as an omen, he donned his green bathrobe and rushed down to the roulette tables, where he placed the $5 chip on the square marked 17. Sure enough, the ball hit 17 and the 35-1 bet paid $175. He let his winnings ride, and once again the little ball landed on 17, paying $6,125. And so it went, until the lucky groom was about to wager $7.5 million. Unfortunately the floor manager intervened, claiming that the casino didn't have the money to pay should 17 hit again. Undaunted, the groom taxied to a better-financed casino downtown. Once again he bet it all on 17 -- and once again it hit, paying more than $262 million. Ecstatic, he let his millions ride -- only to lose it all when the ball fell on 18. Broke and dejected, the groom walked the several miles back to his hotel.

"Where were you?" asked his bride as he entered their room.

"Playing roulette."

"How did you do?"

"Not bad. I lost five dollars."

This story -- told in some parts of Nevada as the gospel truth -- has the distinction of being the only roulette joke we know that deals with a bedrock principle of behavioral economics. Indeed, depending on whether or not you agree with our groom's accounting of his evening's adventure, you might have an inkling as to why we considered a different title for this chapter, something like "Why Casinos Always Make Money." The conventional answer to that question -- that casinos are consistently profitable because the odds for every game are stacked in favor of management -- does not tell the whole story. Another reason casinos always make money is that too many people think like our newlywed: because he started his evening with just $5, he felt his loss was limited to that amount.

This view holds that his gambling spree winnings were somehow not real money -- or not his money, in any event -- and so his losses were not real losses. No matter that had the groom left the casino after his penultimate bet, he could have walked across the street and bought a brand-new Rolls-Royce for every behavioral economist in the country -- and had enough left over to remain a multimillionaire. The happy salesman at the twenty-four-hour dealership -- this is a Vegas story, after all -- would never have thought to ask if the $262 million actually belonged to the groom. Of course it did. But the groom never really saw it that way. Like millions of amateur gamblers, he viewed his winnings as an entirely different kind of money and was therefore more willing to make extravagant bets with it. In casino-speak this is called playing with "house money." The tendency of most gamblers to fall prey to this illusion is why casinos would likely make out like bandits even if the odds were stacked less heavily in their favor.

The "Legend of the Man in the Green Bathrobe" -- as the above tale is known -- illustrates a concept that behavioral economists call "mental accounting." This idea, developed and championed by the University of Chicago's Richard Thaler, underlies one of the most common and costly money mistakes -- the tendency to value some dollars less than others and thus to waste them. More formally, mental accounting refers to the inclination to categorize and treat money differently depending on where it comes from, where it is kept, or how it is spent. To understand how natural, and tricky, this habit can be, consider the following pair of scenarios. Here, as in similar mental exercises you'll find sprinkled throughout this book, try as best as you can to answer each question as realistically as possible. The more "honest" your responses, the more you'll learn about yourself.

Imagine that you've bought a ticket to the Super Bowl or a hit Broadway play. At the stadium or theater you realize you've lost your ticket, which cost $150. Do you spend another $150 to see the game or performance?

Now imagine the same scenario, but you're planning to buy the $150 ticket when you arrive. At the box office, you realize you've lost $150 somewhere in the parking lot. Still, you have more than enough in your wallet to buy the ticket. Do you?

If you're like most people, you probably answered "no" to the first question and "yes" to the second, even though both scenarios present the same dilemma: a loss of $150 and the subsequent prospect of spending another $150 to be entertained. The reason for this seeming inconsistency is that for most people the first scenario somehow translates into a total entertainment cost of $300 -- two actual tickets, each costing $150. This might be too much, even for a Super Bowl or hit play. Conversely, for most people the loss of $150 in cash and the $150 cost of the ticket are somehow separated -- mentally -- into two independent categories or accounts. They are unfortunate but unrelated. This type of thinking -- treating two essentially equal $150 losses in very different ways because they occur in different manners -- is a classic example of mental accounting.

The notion of mental accounts is anathema to traditional economics, which holds that wealth in general, and money in particular, should be "fungible." Fungibility, at its essence, means that $100 in roulette winnings, $100 in salary, and a $100 tax refund should have the same significance and value to you, since each Benjamin (as the kids like to say) could buy the same number of Happy Meals at McDonald's. Likewise, $100 kept under the mattress should invoke the same feelings or sense of wealth as $100 in a bank account or $100 in U.S. Treasury securities (ignoring the fact that money in the bank, or in T-bills, is safer than cash under the bed). If money and wealth are fungible, there should be no difference in the way we spend gambling winnings or salary. Every financial decision should result from a rational calculation of its effect on our overall wealth.

If only this were the case. In reality, as you probably have noticed, people are not computers. They lack the computational power and the strength of will necessary to manage all their finances on a consolidated balance sheet. It would be intellectually difficult, and emotionally taxing, to calculate the cost of every short-term transaction (buying a new compact disc, for instance, or going to a movie) against the size of every long-term goal or need (planning for retirement or saving for college). So to cope with this daunting organizational task, people separate their money into mental accounts, necessarily treating a dollar in one account differently from a dollar in another, since each account has a different significance. A vacation allowance, for instance, is presumably treated with less gravitas than the same amount of money socked away in an Individual Retirement Account.

But what's wrong with that? The average person, more self-aware, perhaps, than the average economist, knows that he or she is not as smart or as iron willed as economists maintain. And that's why people set up mental accounts in the first place. Thus, rather than being illogical or irrational, the ability to corral money into different mental accounts often has beneficial effects. Most important, perhaps, it allows you to save effectively for future goals. After all, "house money" for many Americans is not casino winnings, but the money they manage to squirrel away for a down payment on their dream home. Even profligate spenders manage to avoid tapping into these savings, often for no other reason than that they've placed it in a sacred mental vault. Certainly mental accounting is not always effective, given the problems human beings have with self-control. That's one of the reasons certain tax-deferred retirement accounts such as IRAs or Keogh plans penalize early withdrawals, and it is why they enjoy such popular support. And that is why, when attempting to balance and evaluate their investment portfolio, people often err by failing to knock down mental walls among accounts. As a result, their true portfolio mix -- the combination of stocks, bonds, real estate, mutual funds, and the like -- is often not what they think, and their investment performance often suffers.

In any event, the sometimes useful habit of treating one dollar differently from another has a dark side as well, with consequences far more significant than simply increasing your willingness to make risky bets at roulette tables. By assigning relative values to different moneys that in absolute terms have the same buying power, you run the risk of being too quick to spend, too slow to save, or too conservative when you invest -- all of which can cost you money. We'll get to all of that shortly, but the easiest-to-explain instance of mental accounting's harmful effects is the different value people place on earned income as opposed to gift income. That is, we'll spend $50 from Mom (or $50 we find in the street) with less thought than $50 we've earned on the job. Still, while such distinctions may be illogical from a strict economic point of view, they seem reasonable and harmless enough. After all, gift money -- or casino winnings, for that matter -- is generally "found" money. You didn't have it one second before you got it, so what's the harm in not having it again?

True enough. More troubling, though, and potentially more costly, is the tendency people have to "deposit" money in certain mental accounts when that money is actually part of another. Consider tax refunds, for example. Many people categorize such payments from the government as found money -- and spend it accordingly -- even though a refund is nothing more than a deferred payment of salary. Forced savings, if you will. If, on the other hand, those same people had taken that money out of their paycheck during the course of the previous year and deposited it into a bank account o...

A must read for investors and those interested in human behavior
By Larry
Gary Belsky and Thomas Gilovich's book, Why Smart People Make Big Money Mistakes was first published in 1999. Their book had an enormous impact on me. It was extremely well written and provided fascinating insights into the newly emerging field of behavioral finance. The authors explained why even the smartest people make foolish mistakes. I am certain that every reader experienced what I did, see themselves in the examples and stories provided.

Among the many mistakes the book covers are playing with the house's money, mental accounting (treating the same situation in different ways), confusing something that is familiar with something that is safe, believing in hot hands, herding, the endowment effect, loss aversion, and, of course, overconfidence.

The book triggered a desire to learn everything I could about the field. Eventually I wrote my own book on investor behavior, Rational Investing In Irrational Times: How to Avoid the Costly Mistakes Even Smart People Make (2002).

Fortunately, Belsky and Gilovich have revised and updated their book. Like its predecessor it's a great introduction to the field of behavioral finance. It's both highly readable and entertaining. The book is filled with fresh insights and each chapter contains practical advice on how to avoid the serious errors that most of us make simply because we are human beings. I view it as a must read for not only investors, but also those interested in human behavior.

For those interested in this fascinating field I would also recommend Jason Zweig's Your Money and Your Brain, Daniel Ariely's Predictably Irrational, and Hersh Shefrin's Beyond Greed and Fear.

This great book will really make you think
By B. Sprague
Belsky and Gilovich give a great summary of the short history of the field of behavioral finance. More importantly, they present straightforward, thought-provoking suggestions about how to avoid making common financial mistakes. Much of economic theory is built upon the assumption that human beings are fundamentally rational actors, but this book shows that the idea that we act rationally and consistently in our best interest is just not true. I saw how contradictory and incongruous my own actions are in many areas of my financial life, especially with regard to investments, and I know that reading this book will make me more aware of preventing emotions like anxiety, pride, greed, and fear get in the way of making good decisions. This book is a must read not just for anyone who is an investor, but for everyone who takes part in our economic society (i.e. everyone). Read this book!
