About the Author

• Alasdair Allan is a Scientist, Author, Hacker and Tinkerer, and co-founder of a startup working on fixing the Internet of Things. He is the author of a number of books, and from time to time he also stands in front of cameras. He is a contributing editor for MAKE magazine, and a contributor to the O'Reilly Radar. A few years ago he caused a privacy scandal by uncovering that your iPhone was recording your location all the time. This caused several class action lawsuits and a U.S. Senate hearing. Several years on, he still isn't sure what to think about that. Alasdair is a former academic. As part of his work he built a distributed peer-to-peer network of telescopes which, acting autonomously, reactively scheduled observations of time-critical events. Notable successes included contributing to the detection of what--at the time--was the most distant object yet discovered.
• Don Coleman is a lifelong engineer who has come full circle, from mechanical to software and now to hardware, bridging the gap between all disciplines. Don is a seasoned PhoneGap developer who has embraced it since its inception, and has spoken across the country about the benefits and advantages of using PhoneGap. As the Director of Consulting for Chariot Solutions, a software consulting company near Philadelphia, PA, he works with teams and clients to reinvent their existing technology and lay the groundwork for the future.

Well-Written with Tons of Photos

I spotted this gem at the local library and decided to check it out. I had no idea there was anything called "LE" Bluetooth. The first chapter is devoted to acquainting the reader with the technology and how it works. I thought the authors did a good job explaining the basics of what this standard is, and what platforms use it. The authors base their examples on both Arduino and Raspberry Pi. Hardware for each option is clearly identified in the projects--so you can take your pick.

The projects contain a large number of photos, illustrating what your hardware should look like. For smartphone apps, the book similarly shows lots of screen-captures. For each project, the exact code is given. At the beginning of each project, there is a Bill of Material ("Hardware") so you can figure out what stuff you need to buy.

Sprinkled throughout the book are "Cannon Ball" warnings, to alert the reader to some special difficulties. For example, the authors point out some features in Android that are flat-out defective, and what they can do as a "work around."

Perhaps the most intriguing project in the book relates to using Bluetooth to control a drone!

All in all, an excellent, well-designed book, that is both a good intro to the subject, as well as a practical guide to start using this technology. I really liked the clear layout of the book, and the numerous photos. This book is really aimed to helping the reader SUCCEED!

Arduino projects and almost nothing about Raspberry Pi and Bluetooth

I was very disappointed because there was only one project using the Raspberry Pi and Bluetooth. Almost all of the book's contents was about Arduino Bluetooth projects. The cover is very misleading: it should not have used Raspberry Pi on the cover, and then have only a single Raspberry Pi and Bluetooth project. It seems like the single project using Raspberry Pi was included to be able to put Raspberry Pi on the cover to help sell the book. Don't buy this book if you want information about the Raspberry Pi and Bluetooth.

Superb

For non-experts in the subject (such as this reviewer), this book gives a fascinating overview of organisms that have challenged humankind's domination of this planet. Although the book is targeted toward students and biologists, anyone who has a keen interest in virology will gain much from its perusal. Packed with diagrams, and containing hundreds of references, readers should have no problems in assimilating the information in the book, even though it is quite sizable. I only read chapters 1, 2, 5, 6, and 13 (due only to time constraints and not because the other chapters were deemed unimportant) so my review will be confined to listing some of the interesting facts and helpful features of the book.

These include: 1. The discussion on the history of virology, especially the discussion on D'Herelle's dream and Koch's postulates. The early years of virology are impressive given that viruses could not be seen at the time due to the lack of suitable microscopes. 2. The actual number of species of viruses is 1550, with 2404 tentative species. 3. The methods by which the different viruses were identified experimentally, such as cell cultures and recombinant DNA technology. 4. The methods for measuring the infectivity of viruses. 5. The method of fluctuation analysis for measuring spontaneous mutation rates in viruses. The difference in spontaneous mutation rates between DNA and RNA viruses is astonishing. The authors point out the ability of RNA viruses to exist as "quasi-species", being capable of very rapid adaptation because of the high spontaneous mutation rate. 6. The simple replication abilities of RNA viruses, which although very error prone, results in very rapid evolutionary response. 7. In plant viruses, the existence of genome segments that are frequently packaged in distinct virions, which results in the need for several viruses to co-infect in order to transmit infectivity. 8. Viral RNA genomes are very rich and contain nearly every structural variation possible. 9. The role of horizontal gene transfer in producing the antigenic shifts that produce new pandemic strains of influenza. 10. The ability of cells to counteract virus infections by using gene silencing or the interferon system. Some viruses have evolved mechanisms for evading these defenses. 11. The replication strategies for DNA viruses, and the mechanisms that have evolved to evade host defenses. 12. Viral DNA replication is initiated by using proteins as primers. 13. The ability of viruses to evade host defenses by withdrawing into a latent state. Only a few proteins are expressed when the virus is in this latent state. The authors encourage the reader to pursue research into the mechanisms that are behind the initiation and release from latency, since at the time of writing these mechanisms are not well understood. 14. Gene therapy, certainly the most fascinating of all topics in virology and genetic engineering. 15. The role of self-inactivating (SIN) vectors in enhancing the safety of viral vectors.

About the Author
Lucius Annaeus Seneca, statesman, philosopher, advocate and man of letters, was born at Cordoba in Spain around 4 BCE. He rose to prominence in Rome, pursuing a career in the courts and political life, for which he had been trained, while also acquiring celebrity as an author of tragedies and essays. Falling foul of successive emperors (Caligula in 39 CE and Claudius in 41 CE), he spent eight years in exile, allegedly for an affair with Caligula’s sister. Recalled in 49 CE, he was made praetor and was appointed tutor to the boy who was to become, in 54 CE, the emperor Nero. On Nero’s succession, Seneca acted for some eight years as an unofficial chief minister. The early part of this reign was remembered as a period of sound government, for which the main credit seems due to Seneca. His control over Nero declined as enemies turned the emperor against him with representations that his popularity made him a danger, or with accusations of immorality or excessive wealth. Retiring from public life he devoted his last three years to philosophy and writing, particularly the Letters to Lucilius. In 65 CE following the discovery of a plot against the emperor, in which he was thought to be implicated, he and many others were compelled by Nero to commit suicide. His fame as an essayist and dramatist lasted until two or three centuries ago, when he passed into literary oblivion, from which the twentieth century has seen a considerable and immensely valuable recovery.

Common Sense, Roman Decadence, and the Meaning of Life

The first time I read this book I was amazed and excited, and entering middle age. Seneca's thoughts on the human condition seemed like they could have been written today. Except for some dated Roman references, here is a man trying to define how to live, in what we today would call "the secular society." The series of letters reads like a personal guidebook to ethics. It still speaks to us across the centuries. Seneca was priveleged, ego centric, and all too aware of the fleeting nature of life. He was also a tutor of Nero, a dramatist, philosopher, slave owner, etc. But his essay-like letters - by turns glib and medatative - reveal a man struggling to make sense of a world of power, wealth and abundance, oestensibly ruled by reason, suffused with uncertainty and enveloped in paganism. He was also no doubt polishing his image for future generations. Nonetheless, he talks of god and spirituality, and the early Christians were said to have valued his wisdom. I've read this two or three times. Each time I've given it away to a friend. Once you read it, you'll go back to it again and again. His maxims are famous. His commonsense advice still rings true.

Stoicism - - a modern philosophy

Stoicism has been much misunderstood, and the adjective "stoic," which loosely can be taken to mean bearing up under duress, is partly correct but does not do justice to one of the world's great philosophies. This Penguin volume presents a great selection from the letters of Seneca, which hits all the high points of the philosophy and captures Seneca's remarkable personality, which has made him a hit with the cognoscenti for 2,000 years. Few perhaps realize that the Stoics postulated a great commonwealth governed by law, or that they idealized democracy. Seneca mentions Solon the lawgiver as the creator of democracy and refers numerous times to the Roman Stoic saint, Cato, who strove mightily (and unsuccessfully) to preserve the Roman Republic.

Seneca, like other Stoics, has a doctrine of nature that is remarkably close to that of Emerson or modern American environmentalists. The wise man (sapiens) will never be bored when contemplating the simple things of nature. The natural beauty of the countryside and the healthful action of the waves can have a calming effect (although there's a memorable passage in which a storm causes terrible sea sickness). He also believed in the simple and strenuous life and the avoidance of luxury and decadence, and there are numerous passages in these letters to his disciple, Lucilius, which decry the ostentatious, self indulgent practices of his contemporaries. These are sentiments and ideas adopted by many in the modern world, including President Theodore Roosevelt. Seneca has no patience for philosophy as a word game or a practice of engaging in hair-splitting arguments for their own sake. He rather sees it as a practice or way of life that all those who seek the good should investigate and adopt. While the Stoics believed in democracy and republicanism, their doctrine of freedom is different from the modern idea of Liberty. Freedom was the ability to endure and pursue the good even under tyranny. While that may be admirable, modern commentators on liberty (such as Isaiah Berlin) have pointed out that defining down the range of one's actions is not a satisfactory solution to the problem of the absence of liberty in society or the world.

No stranger to power himself, Seneca virtually ruled Rome as tutor of the boy Nero--and yet he adopts a quite believable stance of simplicity and humility. It's a good bet these letters will still be found absorbing by readers for another 2,000 years.

The unmannerly guest or Penguin butchers a classic author once again.

This will not be a review about Seneca. I suppose I will attempt that one day once I manage to go thru my library's Loeb Classical Library edition of Seneca's Epistles.
The purpose of this review is to bellyache about the Penguin Classics' edition of this work. I come not to criticize this translation. I have no Latin. For all I know it is brilliant.
What I am here to criticize is the decision to edit Seneca's work all to Tartarus and back. There are 124 Letters in Seneca's Epistles. Campbell gives you 40. Or just over 32%! Campbell's criteria as to which letters to present is a personal one. He evaluated their interest and whether or not they were repetitive. His is admittedly charming in his own defense on this issue. He quotes Roger L'Estrange (another anthologist of Seneca's) from 1673 to the effect that anyone who complains about the selection is an unmannerly guest who eats at his host's table and then critiques the meal. I embrace this description. I may well use The Unmannerly Guest as my nom de plume for my reviews from now on.
Here is my problem. All too often the editors or translators of the Penguin Classic editions decide that they know better than the ancient author what is valuable about the work for today's reader. Their Plutarch is one such travesty. Their edition of Polybius is another. What makes it more confusing is they can get it right sometime, as with their edition of Livy.
I think they are really missing their chance here. The Penguin Classics series is the perfect publishing series for modern and complete editions of ancient authors presented in their original form as much as is possible.
Let us look at how personal Campbell's choice is. I happen to be reading The Roman Stoics: Self, Responsibility, and Affection by Gretchen Reydams-Schils. She happens to cite 185 passages from Seneca's Epistles during the course of her book. Because I am The Unmannerly Guest, I took it upon myself to count up how many of those passages were not in Campbell's selection. 122 of the 185 or just over 65%. In other words, she made as much use of the letters Campbell did not publish as those he did. His choices were no more representative of Seneca's thought to Reydams-Schils than the letters he rejected.
Here's another way to look at it. Seneca was writing about a philosophy to be lived. Not a system of thought but a guide to behavior. It is inevitable that such a guide would be repetitive. The same sort of issues, of temptations, of annoyances come up again day after day with slight variations (e.g.,anyone trying to raise courteous children knows what I mean). Repetition in an author dealing with such a guide is to be expected; indeed, it is to be appreciated as helpful. It takes time to learn how to live.
I think we ought to take old Seneca and Plato and Augustine and Machiavelli and Locke and so on seriously. When we read them we should try to sink into their way of living not just their way of thinking about that life. Only then can we evaluate how much they speak to us.
The Penguin Classics, accordingly to this Unmannerly Guest, do not help us in this endeavor. And the fact that they have chosen to present us with a highlighted tour of ancients like Seneca and Polybius is a betrayal of the original mission of the series which was to make the classics easily available to the masses. I speak for those masses as much as anyone. And I say, give me the whole da*@ book. Let me be the one to make the editing decisions.

Jase Is A Temptation You Can't Deny

You know that when you pick up a Roxy Sloane book, you know it's going to get steamy and Tempt Me is no exception.

Jase Banner is a smoking hot alpha that will melt your panties with that smoldering look of his. As you stare into his alluring eyes, you can help but believe that he'll deliver on every single dirty, naughty, seductive promise he whispers to you.

Chloe Archer thought she was on the path she desired, but all that changed when Jase walked into her life. She's stronger than she gives herself credit for, and when she finally comes to terms with what she wants, she jumps all in. I love how through it all, she stays true to her morals and heart.

But be prepared for when Chloe finally gives into her deep desire to be with Jase, because your panties will liquefy, be left in a state of wanton need, and require a cold shower. It gets hot, hot, hot!

Nevertheless, when the cliffhanger comes, you'll be left questioning what will happen next. How did Chloe not see the real Max? Where will she go? Can Jase when Chloe's heart? And what really happened during those missing years Chloe doesn't speak about?

Roxy never disappoints and Tempt Me will keep you on the edge of your seat, captivated by deliciously stunning each word.

I really liked this book. This is book 1 in the Tempation Duet.

Chloe and Jase are hot together. Jase is hired to find dirt on Chloe through an anonymous person. Chloe thinks she is living the fairytale with Max, her fiance. How wrong she could be. Jace appears in her life out of nowhere and he won’t take no for an answer, when she turns him away.

This book is hot and steamy and has you panting. Jace is hot, cocky, arrogant and full of himself oh and did I mention dirty talker? No I didn’t, but yes he is. Chloe is young, beautiful and like I said thinks she was swept of her feet. A bit naive though in my opinion. Looks and actions are deceiving. The sexual tension is combustible. Its gritty and raw.

When Chloe meets Jace, she feels different. Not the way a girl should when you are engaged to be married. Jace throws a monkey wrench into her life at this time. Like I said she thinks she is living the whirlwind romance and fairytale.

Then there is Max, the fiance. Max comes from a wealthy, high society family. Not a fan of Sienna, The step-sister, but I hated Max. I mean I truly hated him. Like punch him in the face dislike. He hires Jace because he is having second thoughts about marrying Chloe and he wants the big rock back in his family's hands. So he wants dort found so the engagement can be broken. Now my other dislike for Max comes in the ending of this book. It leaves you hanging, truly. What will Chloe do when the truth comes out. You will have to read the next book Tease Me to find out and that is where I am headed now.

There are some grammatical errors and I can point out one scene that doesn't jive, but other than that it was a really good read. I can look past those.

Chloe Archer, young beautiful girl living what she thinks is a modern day fairy tale. Max pretty, rich, spoiled man who is thought to be Chloe' s Prince charming. Jase is a gorgeous, sexy, man whore and is the private investigator Prince charming has hired to investigate Chloe, his fiance. Sienna is Max's step sister, keep an eye on her, I believe she is going to be more of a player in this. Max wants Chloe to hang around her more, to learn from . So much for Prince charming. When Jase can find no dirt on Chloe, Max hires Jase to seduce Chloe. If I say much more it ruin the story and spoiling it would be tragic. I think I know where this is going, it is getting there that will be half the fun. I am also, fairly certain there will be some jaw dropping drama that will come down. Jase is HOT and sexy. Chloe is beautiful and insecure and pretty much alone in life. Can't wait to see how it all plays out. I certainly recommend this dirty, filthy series.
