This Book Surprised Me!

Let me start by saying, I had no idea who Simon Spurrier is. I knew Tan Eng Huat's work, and enjoy it, but usually when there's a 'new' author I'm always careful to take a chance. However, the NOW initiative Marvel started really had me excited, so I tried everything from their first few months of new releases, and I was happy I did. I've grown tired of Bendis' writing, and his x-books fell flat for me, so high-profile comics writers are not always a plus. (Sorry, Bendis! I still love your Ultimate Spider-Man if not your team books!)

I got this book thinking "Legion? Who gives a crap about him?" but thought hey, in the spirit of Marvel NOW I'll try it. It ended up being the most captivating read of that entire first wave, and certainly my favorite X-Men book of the bunch. Spurrier's story made me invested in David Haller's quest, and it was the book I least expected to like! I picked up the individual issues as they came out, but am getting the trades so I can pass them around to friends.

This and Brian Wood's X-Men are easily the smartest, most tightly scripted, and most captivating x-books on the shelf. Before these two titles, the only x-book that has maintained my interest over the long course has been Peter David's X-Factor, which is building to a satisfying close.

If you want to try something a little different, I can't recommend the new X-Men Legacy enough!

Powerful and psychologically screwed up side-character gets his own chance to shine.

I think my eyes bulged when I read that Legion was getting his own title. Not that I hate Legion, but...he's not exactly what I'd consider traditional or conventional star material. Especially considering how the last X-Men Legacy run went; though, I suppose it's appropriate to relaunch the title with Legion given who he is. I don't know how the comics industry works, but I can only imagine someone pitching this idea and various editors just groaning at the prospect. Yet Spurrier manages to write him in a way that respects the complicated nature of his past yet integrate some character growth to develop him into a character that can take the spotlight and be true to himself while not alienating the audience. Because traditionally, Legion is one screwed up character. I mean, really screwed up. But with a little sanity to balance him out (at least during the time he's narrating to us), he can tell a great story.

For those unfamiliar with Legion, a little back story should be understood before diving in. The absolute basics are covered in story: He's the omega-level mutant son of Charles Xavier who has a literal legion of powers to draw upon. The problem is that these powers have identities of their own, one for each ability, and they're mostly homicidal. He's not, and he's struggling to control them, and at the start he's basically learning to cope. Until the realizes that Professor X has died, and #$%^ hits the fan.

I think the first six issues are great, if you know a good story is coming up. If not, it might take a leap of faith but you can tell something good is there if you look close enough. Legion is actually somewhat hilarious,and interesting enough to have the spot light on him because we hardly look elsewhere. We do see other X-men but they are written stereotypically...which is fine, since in the end we're just interested in Legion and they're only there to advance the plot. The exception is Blindfold, whose backstory is fleshed out to be rather dark and explanatory of where she gets her odd verbal tic. She, like David (David Haller is Legion's real name, and the one I should be using considering he HATES the name Legion)is rather screwed up mentally and obviously going to help carry the X-Men Legacy title.

The art is something that you have to be told you'll get used to, because it works here. It won't work for most other comics, but with how crazy and erratic Legion can be it just works here just fine. It's not bad, but it's different. Really, I can't describe it well other than calling it unique but fitting. It's less realistic, with sharper edges, and kinda perfect for a tale about someone constantly on the edges of reality. Probably not selling it well.

What gets it a 4/5 is mainly the lack of a clear focus. You get the sense that a major story is at play, but aren't shown it other than having the main villain directly involve himself. You don't know where he's going or what he wants to accomplish specifically, and really only know that he's a bigot with way too much power and little regard for other lives. I also sense that, for new readers, David is interesting but a confusing character. I point that out because Marvel NOW, from what I understand, was to bring in new readers. I don't think that a blatant info dump is necessary, but from my prospective you really didn't get a sense of how BAD it was for David. I'm guessing that's coming up later, and really, while reluctant to give it 5 stars I wish they gave options to reward a 4.5 or something.

Very good all around!

Great series. The cover art really grabbed me and much to my delight the art on the inside was good too. I had never heard of Legion before and I really enjoyed his story. Its a quick read (only 24 issues!), and will keep you sucked in till the very end.

Bernard J. Smith, School of Geosciences, The Queen's University, Belfast His research interests centre around weathering in a variety of geomorphological settings. Most work at present is, however, concentrated on investigations into urban stone decay. These include: stress inheritance in stone, concepts of durability, microfracturing in granites, short-term exposure trials of building stones and the difficulties of projecting the long-term behaviour of stone in buildings. This work is supported by two current EPSRC grants on 'the effects of surface alteration of stone on moisture and pollutant uptake' and 'The catastrophic decay of building sandstones'. Alice V. Turkington Alice Turkington is Assistant Professor at the Department of Geography, University of Kentucky. Her PhD. at the Queen's University, Belfast was 'The durability of sandstone in salt-rich environments'.

This is one of the finest books I have ever read on business related topics and I found it 100% accurate. The best thing about this book is that it has tried to reveal both sides of the "functional stupidity" phenomena. How it benefits the organization and how it can harm the industry. I think its a must read for all senior executives. But I fear that if I share snippets from this book in my linkedin profile, I might loose my job.

If you're tired of business book hyperbole and particularly of the cult of leadership, this is the book for you. I thoroughly enjoyed it, particularly the direct language. The two authors take careful aim against most business fads, from total quality management to branding, and they usually hit the target. This book changed my life when I was 20, over 30 years ago. It is worth reading. Back then, some of these ideas were "radical". They may seem less so now, but nonetheless, it is good to know where you come from.

Dated but with a Place in History

When first printed in 1974, this would have been a ground-breaking read for women of faith, introducing the concept of options for women's lives inside and/or outside the home. Today, though, it is quite dated and worth the read mainly as a snapshot of Christian feminist history. Two of the fifteen chapters are notable exceptions: one about women in several of the pagan Biblical nations, each discussed individually; and the second about wasting the church's gifts. Especially the former, coupled with the book's place in history, makes this book a good addition to any Christian feminist collection.

Great book if you ignore the annoying style.

This was the required text for an English/Linguistics class that I took, and it's fantastic as an introduction or refresher. It surveys the most important fields in linguistics and gives equal time to each subfield, even going into traditionally ignored areas like Stylistics. The layout makes everything clear, there are plenty of charts, and there's a helpful glossary in the back for quick reference. It helps to reread some areas, specifically those on syntax, but it's worth the effort. There are also mini-profiles on selected linguistics who have made an impact in the field, and this helps to put a face on what at first seem like cold, technical theories. Linguistics is a great field, and this book does much to pique the reader's interest in it. I would highly recommend this book to any English student who's interested in the structure of English and is considering getting into Linguistics. The information in it is that good.

While the information is fantastic, the tone of the book is a bit too college-y for my taste. I realize that this text is for college students, but frequent references to dorms rooms scattered with pizza boxes and staying out late with "bros" can get annoying. Also, the authors can get too clever at times, like when they explain how nouns work by using the noun "noun" as the example. Cute, but likely to confuse the dickens out of someone who's not used to the subject.

That's a minor quibble with an otherwise fantastic book. For those who question it's use as an introductory text for future linguistics students, I can only suggest that by becoming intimately familiar with how your own language works, you will be better prepared to tackle something as complicated as Tsez or Hadza. This text keeps the examples in familiar territory, and once someone is comfortable enough they can then use what they know to pick apart something unfamiliar. After this text, something like Ladefoged's "Course In Phonetics" may be the next logical step.

Great book if you're interested in English

I was assigned this book for a class I was taking, Modern English Grammer, and to be honest, as much as I enjoy English I was not looking forward to reading a book about how it works! This one, however, is written in an informitive, yet readable format. Meaning - it teaches and breaks down what it needs to, but there are interesting stories and tidbits to explain, apply, etc. All in all, I thought it was a really good book for this field and if you're interested in English as a teacher or student this is a good book to add to your bookshelf.

This book provides an introduction into the fundamentals of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. In Part 1, the essential principles are developed. Applications and extensions of the formalism can be found in Part 2. The book includes not only material that is presented in traditional textbooks on quantum mechanics, but also discusses in detail current issues such as interaction-free quantum measurements, neutrino oscillations, various topics in the field of quantum information as well as fundamental problems and epistemological questions, such as the measurement problem, entanglement, Bell's inequality, decoherence, and the realism debate. A chapter on current interpretations of quantum mechanics concludes the book. To develop quickly and clearly the main principles of quantum mechanics and its mathematical formulation, there is a systematic change between wave mechanics and algebraic representation in the first chapters. The required mathematical tools are introduced step by step. Moreover, the appendix collects compactly the most important mathematical tools that supplementary literature can be largely dispensed. In addition, the appendix contains advanced topics, such as Quantum- Zeno effect, time-delay experiments, Lenz vector and the Shor algorithm. About 250 exercises, most of them with solutions, help to deepen the understanding of the topics. About the Author

Jochen Pade studied physics in Freiburg (Germany), where he made his PhD in theoretical physics in 1978. Since 1980, he has been a lecturer at the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg (Germany). His research interests are: Theoretical physics, didactics and popularization of science.
