HCI Models, Theories, and Frameworks: Toward a Multidisciplinary Science (Interactive Technologies)From Brand: Morgan Kaufmann

Finally-a thorough pedagogical survey of the multidisciplinary science of HCI.

Human-Computer Interaction spans many disciplines, from the social and behavioral sciences to information and computer technology. But of all the textbooks on HCI technology and applications, none has adequately addressed HCI's multidisciplinary foundations-until now.

HCI Models, Theories, and Frameworks fills a huge void in the education and training of advanced HCI students. Its authors comprise a veritable house of diamonds-internationally known HCI researchers, every one of whom has successfully applied a unique scientific method to solve practical problems.

Each chapter focuses on a different scientific analysis or approach, but all in an identical format, especially designed to facilitate comparison of the various models.

HCI Models, Theories, and Frameworks answers the question raised by the other HCI textbooks:
How can HCI theory can support practice in HCI?
* Traces HCI research from its origins
* Surveys 14 different successful research approaches in HCI
* Presents each approach in a common format to facilitate comparisons
* Web-enhanced with teaching tools at http://www.HCImodels.com

*Contributors are leading researchers in the field of Human-Comptuter Interaction

*Fills a major gap in current literature about the rich scientific foundations of HCI

*Provides a thorough pedogological survey of the science of HCI

Review
"Not since Card, Moran, and Newell's Psychology of Human Computer Interaction in 1983 has so much been brought together to advance the science of HCI. This book is a must-read for researchers and Ph. D. students.
I am very impressed with the undertaking of this book and with its results. We have many models and theories in HCI, and this book collects them and encourages people to think about them together. I'm sure good things will come from those who digest this all."

--Judith Olson, University of Michigan

"Only with slowly evolving frameworks such as these can we understand and guide the advances in technology and its uses that lie ahead. This landmark collection will be of lasting value."

--Jonathan Grudin, Microsoft Research

"Computing and information technologies are providing profound advances for individuals and society. We have gained new insights from perceiving dynamic visualizations; enhanced our thinking by manipulating flexible representations; increased our knowledge through global search technologies; discovered new modes of communication and collaboration through networked technologies; formed new communities and relationships from near-universal access to the Web; developed new methods of buying and selling; and so on.
The phenomena underlying the relation between people and technology are complex and varied. Understanding these phenomena is a real challenge, especially given that they span perceptual, cognitive, social, organizational, commercial, and cultural factors.
Practitioners in HCI disciplines (interaction designers, information architects, usability testers, ethnographic field investigators, etc.) offer skills, methods, and practices to design and evaluate these technologies. Researchers in HCI provide innovations and empirical groundings, as well as theoretical perspectives, which are critical for a robust field. But the theoretical work is scattered across many sources, and practitioners are largely unaware of the range of theoretical work that has been done.
This volume is a valuable collection of diverse theoretical perspectives by some of the most articulate advocates in the field of Human-Computer Interaction. It is a unique resource for grasping the broad landscape of theoretical thinking that frames HCI. HCI practitioners should study it to deepen their understanding of the phenomena they are trying to influence. And HCI researchers should study it for inspiration to broaden and strengthen the theoretical foundations of HCI."

--Tom Moran, IBM Almaden Research Center

From the Back Cover
In the field of human-computer interaction (HCI), researchers and practitioners from diverse disciplines in the social sciences, information technology, engineering, and computer science all strive to improve the relationship, or interface, between person and machine. The multidisciplinary tradition of HCI certainly has enriched its development. But its rich diversity, and the lack of any comprehensive resource that describes it in detail, has also made it difficult for many to attain a sufficient grasp of HCI's varied foundations in and approaches to science.

This book—the first of its kind—fills a void for those wishing to thoroughly understand HCI's diverse foundations. It brings together a cross section of internationally-known HCI researchers, each of whom has successfully applied a unique scientific method to solve practical problems. HCI Models, Theories, and Frameworks squarely addresses the issue that other books only touch upon—how HCI theory can support practice.

Is this in english?!
By A Customer
It's a difficult book to read. It assumes you are at graduate or post-graduate level and already know a lot about the topic. I am working on my Master's in Interaction Design and I found myself being forced to re-read paragraphs because I had no idea what I just read! On the other hand, the book goes deep into HCI issues and methods and often leaves you with good research questions. If you're looking for a book to help you with real issues related to interface design or product usability, this isn't it. This book is all about theory. It's boring at best.
It all comes down to this: If you're all about theory, this book is for you. If you want to be able to apply what you read to real-world situations - get something else.

Expensive Book and the Author is a Wind Bag
By HCI student
The text book.. I think the author is a wind bag academic that blathers on and on to show how smart he is.
The book could be edited to half the content, paragraphs could be concise and effective.
The author lacks pragmatic writing skills that convey a message clearly. He circles three times around a topic before he actually makes a point. It is like witnessing a Labrador take a dump, only it is required reading...

Constantly amazed at this book
By C. Wingrave
Working through this book, I am constantly amazed at the number of topics covered and the depth and clarity of the authors (and in some cases, the entertaining story they tell). There is much important theory that exists in HCI and I have not found a book that does such a wonderful job bringing it, and the proper author to explain it, all together. Previously, it was a chore to track down the important theoretical works, not so now.
This book is NOT going to help you build better webpages or for that matter, teach you to build a better GUI. Do not expect it to as HCI is only marginally about this. HCI is more importantly about the work and activity people perform on a computer and through a computer with others. If you do not have this concept in mind, do not read this book as you will waste your time (and possibly write a bad review for it). If you are intrigued, read "The Design of Everyday Things" to give you the basic philosophy of HCI and this book to give you the theory of it.
Unfortunately, some chapters are not as strong as others and the binding of them all together is not as strong as it could be to give a complete picture of the field. That said, this is an important milestone for HCI and should be readable (and read) by all who have taken a basic HCI course.

Initiation (Tell Me When Book 1), by Mia West

Bryn Talbot knows who she is: a time-traveling art thief with a list of lovers seven millennia deep. Seduction is part of her job, something she enjoys in the moment – whenever and wherever that may be – and then leaves behind. Until she gets a hot new colleague.

Bryn knows him only as Doc, the man who must keep her fit to travel, and give her the orgasms that launch her into the past. But this Doc is nothing like his predecessor. He’s younger. He’s as scarred as she is. And when Bryn pushes his buttons, this Doc finds hers and pushes back…with skill.

When Doc’s initial effort lands Bryn practically in the lap of the Roman-era blacksmith she seeks, she suspects her once-routine job is about to be reforged with white-hot intensity.

Initiation is the 1st novelette (11,000 words) of Tell Me When, an erotic time travel series about a strong woman who discovers her hero when she least expects him. Recommended reading order:

TELL ME WHEN Series
All time-traveling art thief Bryn Talbot needs to cross history is a partnered orgasm. As her erotic adventures take her from the Roman frontier to the Spanish Inquisition, from the destruction of Pompeii to the Black Plague, Bryn’s one constant is Tell, a fiercely protective ex-boxer who challenges her as much as he turns her on. Is theirs a professional partnership for the ages, or something far riskier than Bryn’s ever experienced?

Clever Erotica Sci-Fi / Paranormal - Is that a new sub-genre?
By Amazon Customer
Imaginative. Clever. Enjoyable read. I need to invent a new sub-genre for Initiation. Erotica Sci-Fi / Paranormal. Erotica sci-fi is difficult, but Initiation has a straight forward, simple time travel plot, albeit slightly kinky. Not much chance of an illogical paradox being created, unless the artifact that is stolen needs would have been used to change history. So the sex wasn't mind bending to accept. The protagonist, Bryn, has most of the characteristics of succubus, except she doesn't terminate souls as far as we know. The graphic sex was satisfying to me and the ending leaves enough ambiguity to interest me in reading the sequels.

Lots of fun
By LietoFine
I got so much amusement from this story. It's just a short snippet, but a great way to find out if you like the premise. I found it to be a lot of fun – resourceful, sex-positive female character can time travel through partnered orgasms. The language is course and erotic and let's face it, the book is all about sex. But it's got a fun story and I can't wait to read the rest of the series to see how the story unfolds. This first bit barely introduces the main characters relationship: it's the start of everything and we're just getting a feeling for who they are. This story is written in first person, from the heroine's perspective.

Cracking India: A Novel, by Bapsi Sidhwa

The 1947 Partition of India is the backdrop for this powerful novel, narrated by a precocious child who describes the brutal transition with chilling veracity. Young Lenny Sethi is kept out of school because she suffers from polio. She spends her days with Ayah, her beautiful nanny, visiting with the large group of admirers that Ayah draws. It is in the company of these working class characters that Lenny learns about religious differences, religious intolerance, and the blossoming genocidal strife on the eve of Partition. As she matures, Lenny begins to identify the differences between the Hindus, Moslems, and Sikhs engaging in political arguments all around her. Lenny enjoys a happy, privileged life in Lahore, but the kidnapping of her beloved Ayah signals a dramatic change. Soon Lenny’s world erupts in religious, ethnic, and racial violence. By turns hilarious and heartbreaking, the domestic drama serves as a microcosm for a profound political upheaval.

From Publishers Weekly
The narrator of Sidwha's ( The Bride ) timely novel about the violent 1947 partition of India is the extremely observant Lenny Sethi, whose family belongs to the Parsee community in Lahore. As a child, a polio victim and a member of a minority, she is the perfect witness (though somewhat precocious) to the historic upheaval. Sidwha tempers Lenny's hyper-awareness, however, by capturing the whole range of her fears and joys as her innocence becomes another casualty of the violence among Moslems, Sikhs and Hindus. At one point Lenny declares: "Lying doesn't become me. I can't get away with the littlest thing." Persuasive, this statement reinforces earlier comments she lets slip about herself which display this artless candor: "the manipulative power of my limp"; "I place a hypocritical arm protectively round her shoulders." Lenny's honesty is compelling, and the reader, like many in the story, cannot help but trust her. She is alternately thrilled and frightened by the events she dutifully records, and so, in the end, is the reader.

From Library Journal
Presented in the first person by a sparsely educated Parsee girl in Lahore named Lenny, who grows from four to eight as she narrates, this novel is incongruously overloaded with erudite diction. Thus, unlike Huck Finn's tale, this child's story becomes unbelievable. Despite the title, it focuses on the everyday lives of Lenny, her family, and their associates, often interesting but frequently trivial. Throughout the book, Lenny includes verbatim transcriptions of extended conversations/situations about racial relations, sex, politics, religion, and selected aspects of the 1947 Partition. Sadly, the promise of the novel (semi-autobiographical?) is inadequately fulfilled and seems to falter from its conception. (Needed: a glossary of Indian words.)-- Glenn O. Carey, Eastern Kentucky Univ., Richmond
Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Kirkus Reviews
Pakistani Sidhwa's third novel (The Bride, 1983; The Crown Eaters, 1982)--written from the point of view of a young girl who's surrounded by the personal and political violence that accompanied the partitioning of India in 1947--manages to do justice to the complexity of racial, ethnic, and religious violence in the era and to evoke the passage from an affluent childhood to the ambiguities of experience. ``India is going to be broken....And what happens if they break it where our house is?'' asks narrator Lenny, the daughter (who turns eight in 1947) of an affluent Parsi family in Lahore. And in fact her household does break apart when her young nanny, or Ayah, is kidnapped. Before that event takes center stage, the novel glorifies in the ``beautifully endowed'' world, which, as evoked by Sidhwa's luminous present-tense prose, is laminated with the magic of childish wonder: moving between her own house and that of her dynamic Godmother (``It is her nature to know things''), who lives ``with her docile old husband and slavesister,'' Lenny dramatizes the textures of multicultural Indian life, with its summer trips to the Himalayan foothills, dinner parties, visits from the ice-candy man, and, increasingly, hints of ``Hindu-Muslim trouble.'' While Lenny ``learns to tell tales'' by ``offering lengthier and lengthier chatter'' to fill dinner-time silences, she also becomes ``aware of religious differences.'' Sikhs start keeping to themselves, whereas before ``everybody is themselves.'' Violence escalates, India is divided, fires appear ``all over Lahore,'' and Ayah is kidnapped. She's finally found in the red-light district, then rescued through Godmother's influence, but it's clear that- -along with India and Lenny--she will never be the same. Richly layered, both realistic and magically evocative as well as topical: a novel that brings to triumphant life an India that ``has less to do with fate than with the will of men.'' -- Copyright ©1991, Kirkus Associates, LP. The Partitiion of India
By Joyce Merletti
The story is told through the eyes of Lenny, a young Indian girl whose beautiful Hindu nanny has included her in her friendship with a number of young men of various religions and walks of life. Despite the differences, they are united by their love for her. As their beloved nation drifts toward a complete rupture, violence begins in the streets; the child sees some of the young men changing religions to protect their families, or leaving the city for a safer place. She begins to understand the religious divisions that are ripping the fabric of India. She witnesses scenes of slaughter; her nanny is betrayed and kidnapped, bringing her to a shameful life.
No childhood can continue amid this terror, and the reader feels such sympathy for little, crippled Lenny and her young friends. But heart-wrenching as the story is, it is only one story of that time, and Sidhwa tells it very well. She sheds light on this dark period, but in doing so, makes the reader want to know more about that time, and what led to it.

Loss of innocence and national chaos
By Luan Gaines
Wrenched from the security of the familiar, a young girl gleans intimate knowledge of the nature of betrayal. As a cosseted child, Lenny's short life is defined by the affection of family, friends and her beloved Ayah. As most children who have the blessing of regularity in their lives and know the indulgence of boredom, Lenny is on an intimate terms with mundane household affairs and neighborhood gossip, her extended family ever available for entertainment and amusing peccadilloes. The family's simple life changes forever with the Partition of India in 1947 and the creation of Pakistan for Muslims, Hindus and Sikhs remaining in the state of India. As citizens of the newly formed Pakistan, this family's everyday reality begins to shift with the changing times, threatening to destroy a child's security and trust forever.
In Lahore, a city that has welcomed differences and encouraged variety, Muslims, Sikhs and Hindus have mixed without incident. After the Partition, the dangers of alliance permanently stamp the mark of change and entire families begin to disappear overnight. In agonizing stages, Sidwha relates this tragic account through Lenny's eyes. And it is that vision, with glimpses of violence flashing around the periphery, that ultimately alerts Lenny to the shape of the future. The juxtaposition of family life and national chaos outlines an insider's interpretation of daily routine and a whole country spinning out of control. Peopled with eccentric characters and quirky personalities, one of the most romantic and beloved is Lenny's beautiful and desirable Ayah. Ultimately, the abrupt disappearance of that Ayah, who has been kidnapped by nefarious characters, is central to the theme of this carefully wrought tale. All sense of harmony and continuity is abruptly shattered by the miasma of violence that seeps under closed doors at night like a poisonous invisible fog. This book is a stunning reminder of the nature of impermanence, "collateral damage" in the form of a loving Ayah, whose lovely spirit is virtually destroyed along with Lenny's innocence.

I was shocked to read a couple of previous reviews claiming "Cracking India" portrays certain groups as monstrous while favoring others. Whoever has made these statements has obviously skipped over huge chunks of Bapsi Sidhwa's book, for Sidhwa goes out of her way to present a balanced point of view of Partition. This book is about the animal inside all people -- the demon that can emerge in the name of religion within everyone, whether Muslim, Hindu, Sikh, or whatever. This book is not about an "us" and the "other" -- or conversely, it deals very much with the "us" and the "other," and in doing so, is not. While i could very easily disprove the claims of bias made by a couple of previous reviews, by quoting several powerful incidents from the book i would only be doing future readers a disfavor -- i do not want to rob anyone of exactly the elements of universal horror and suspense that make the book the masterpiece it is. I recommend this book highly to anyone -- i know it left me tear-streaked and stunned.

God's design for fellowship
By DMSunshine
Excellent publishing of the true meaning of Biblical fellowship. There have been many authors who have tried to grasp this topic but dear Jerry Bridges is very successful in doing so. It is an easy read and gives tangible examples to make the topic easy to understand.

Good, Fairly Well Researched Attempt to View the Modern Church in an Acts 2 Goal
By Joshua-Paul Johnian
If you have studied on this topic before then there will not be anything "new" or "groundbreaking" But this is not a critique of the book. In fact, this work is well researched and does a reasonable job of remaining within the context of Scripture and theme. For those, in the modern church, who are looking to serve or approach ministry from an Acts 2 viewpoint this book is an excellent place to begin.

If you are wanting to instruct your small group, church or fellowship to re-think mainstream modern ministry then this is very good resource to engage in.

Thorough yet readable book on fellowship
By Cathryn
This book has an excellent balance of practical theology, exposition of Scripture, and readability. Bridges description of fellowship is the thorough, yet accessible to both light and deep readers. I've already read through it twice and I have notes everywhere. It has shaped my view of the church and helped me see how to interact with other Christians.

Breathtaking
By MichaelEaston
I absolutely love this series. And the third installment has only made my affection for this story and it's aouthor have sustantially. The character interaction is so real, the story flows better and becomes more enchanting, and the romance is unlike most, were-as it is simple and uncomplicated, but still interesting becouse of this. The religion found in the books is also very well designed, clearly inspied by prominent religions today, especially christianity. There is so much more I can say, but for now I'll just wait for the next book, can't wait! Any fan of fantasy should get thier hands on these books.

great read!
By carlazoe
I cannot hardly wait for the next books to come out!! The first three were amazing. I loved the charachters and the relationships they had with one another. I loved the flow of the book and the adventures. The animals were so amazing and realistic I wanted to be there to experience them. Aram is a hero, yet has all the flaws of one who struggles with humaness.PLEASE HURRY WITH THE NEXT BOOK!!!

Now anticipating Book 4
By H. Ibarra (aka Hoodoo)
I've loved this series, but after the phenomenal ending of Book 2, I wasn't sure what I'd find with this one. However, I was pulled back into this story from the opening pages when Aram is searching for a way out of darkness, back to Ka'en. I liked that during his struggle to live we got a chance to see events through others' eyes. Once Aram recovers he starts traveling the world to build his armies, and we see more of this world and meet alot more of the people in it. Manon, his thoughts, and his methods take a larger part of this tale. Aram learns about the danger of the dragons, encounters one of their offspring, and unravels the history of the last horrorific war against Manon through tales and the physical evidence he encounters on his voyage. We are also given the chance to guess how Elam will factor into the coming war, and it's very easy to despise their avaricious, jaded, Carthaginian-like society. My favorite scene in this installment involves strife between Aram and an unknown beast in "the lost". This author has mastered war scenes, and he proves here that he can masterfully describe a desperate, and spooky, survival match between two vastly different beings. Another favorite scene takes place between Joktan and Ka'en toward the end. We see Ka'en's pride for the man she loves and the request she makes of Joktan strikes as so natural and true from her perspective, even though I didn't think about it until that moment.

I had read this series a couple times over when my husband finally decided to read it. He is not an avid reader, but he read this series fast and was impressed. We are both looking forward to Book 4. I expect it to be more shocking than Book 2. And I have no doubt that there will finally be full war, but I hope the author will not sacrifice Thaniel, Ka'en or Durlrang in the process.

The Latest Scientific Discoveries Point to an Intentional Creator

Most of us remember the basics from science classes about how Earth came to be the only known planet that sustains complex life. But what most people don't know is that the more thoroughly researchers investigate the history of our planet, the more astonishing the story of our existence becomes. The number and complexity of the astronomical, geological, chemical, and biological features recognized as essential to human existence have expanded explosively within the past decade. An understanding of what is required to make possible a large human population and advanced civilizations has raised profound questions about life, our purpose, and our destiny. Are we really just the result of innumerable coincidences? Or is there a more reasonable explanation?

This fascinating book helps nonscientists understand the countless miracles that undergird the exquisitely fine-tuned planet we call home--as if Someone had us in mind all along.

He is the author of many books, including More Than a Theory and Why the Universe Is the Way It Is. An astronomer and a member of the pastoral staff of a church near Caltech, Ross has addressed students and faculty on over three hundred campuses in the United States and abroad on a wide variety of science-faith topics. From science conferences to churches to government and private research labs, Ross presents powerful evidence for a purpose-filled universe. He lives in the Los Angeles area.

From the Back Cover
"With his typical clarity, insight, and precision, Ross shows how recent scientific findings undermine naturalism while simultaneously providing evidence that there is a plan, purpose, and design in the universe."--Sean McDowell, professor, Biola University; bestselling author of over fifteen books, including A New Kind of Apologist

"In Improbable Planet, Ross holds readers' hands, leading them in a readable yet gently technical format through a compelling layer-upon-layer argument for the distinctiveness of the planet on which we live and of the preparation for inimitable life on Earth. The text is replete with references from primary scientific articles in some of the most well-respected journals, underscoring the highest academic rigor taken in substantiating the factual claims. Only the shamefully flippant could dismiss this book as being a faith-filled presentation rather than the scholarly work it represents."--James M. Tour, T. T. and W. F. Chao Professor of Chemistry, Rice University; R&D magazine's 2013 Scientist of the Year

"Hugh Ross brilliantly silences those who would claim that this Earth, this solar system, this galaxy, and this universe are nothing but a mere accident. Improbable Planet is technical yet poetic; thoroughly scientific yet faith-inspiring. I commend it to anyone who seriously contemplates the wonder of this planet we call Earth."--Pat Robertson, founder/chairman, The Christian Broadcasting Network, Inc.

"Hugh Ross takes us on a riveting tour of the scientific story, from the beginning of the cosmos to present humankind. He shows how that story pushes us toward the conclusion that purpose has driven the whole story, with the different pieces intertwined and each supporting the production of an ideal habitat for human beings right here and right now. Not only will this commend Christian faith to scientifically minded inquirers, but it will also strengthen the confidence of believers that we inhabit and participate in a meaningful and purposeful story."--C. John "Jack" Collins, professor of Old Testament, Covenant Theological Seminary

"With thorough notations and research, Hugh Ross takes us on a journey through time and space to bring us firmly back to our own planet, formed by one Creator. For those who need a scientific explanation of our universe and the life-forms within it, you will be satisfied. For those who already believe that God's divine hand created the world and all life within, you will be validated. Hugh Ross writes to stretch our intellect and to strengthen our faith. Improbable Planet does the improbable--demonstrates that the language of science does not threaten but instead augments the prose of evangelism."--Ed Young, senior pastor, Second Baptist Church, Houston, TX

Treasure Trove of Information
By Philip DiMarco Jr
Hugh Ross's voice is mostly in the background as he has done a lot of in-depth research for this book and simply presents his findings for the near entirety of the work. I appreciate this as it is clear how he interprets his findings (he does go on at the end of the work to briefly present his view) so even if you sharply disagree with him, you would have to be blindly obstinate to not appreciate the value of his research findings here.

The price of this book is a steal and despite its somewhat short length, it is full of meat and no filler. I simply have not encountered another work which has so much detailed information on its topic, in such a short span of pages. It is not the 'easiest' read, but certainly one of great value.

He is incapable of writing a bad book!
By Donttreadonme
I have read more books from Dr. Ross than I can count. He has helped me gain a deeper understanding and admiration for the complexity of God's creations and the uniqueness of this vast planet we live on. After reading any of his books, I believe it is literally impossible for someone to walk away and not believe in God. He makes the case so compelling that even an ardent atheist should walk away believing in at least a "designer". His books are very easy to read and fascinating with the amounts of detail and mathematical statistics.

This is Hugh Ross's best written, most impressive book written for a popular audience.
By Sarah Sumner
This book should be carefully studied by atheists, skeptics, and people of faith alike. It is a book for thinkers who want knowledge and understanding. Rice University Professor James Tour (who is T.T. and W.F. Chao Professor of Chemistry) says of this book: "Only the shamefully flippant could dismiss this book as being a faith-filled presentation rather than the scholarly work it represents." In my own professorial opinion, this is Hugh Ross's best written, most impressive book written for a popular audience. It is loaded with almost 40 pages of citations that are nicely placed at the end of the book (to ease readers) and delineated in a sequential, logical way that shows, with each chapter building on the chapter before, how Earth's development happened.

The relevance of this book is that it offers clear answers to felt macro-questions
that people often ask in moments of curiosity and agitation.

* How much longer can Earth continue to support over 7 billion people effectively?
* Why are there so many species of life on earth?
* How did nature generate the leap from non-life to life?
* How did Earth go from being formless and void, to being covered by water, to being able sustain over 8 billion different forms of life?
* How did Earth become able to support physical life forms, mindful forms of thinking/feeling animals, and also spiritual/mindful/physical people?
* Why does human life need such a massive universe in which 50 billion trillion stars comprise only 1% of its total mass?
* What does Earth's history reveal about the value of human life, including my life?
* If human life is so valuable, then why are billions of people living in miserable conditions?
* What do the ongoing massive changes in Earth's conditions suggest about the future of Earth and the future of humanity?

Using the scholarly research of world-renowned scientists and refereed academic journals,
Hugh Ross presents an elaborate set of scientific facts garnered from several different scientific disciplines (astrophysics,
biophysics, chemistry, geology, biology, etc.). His main contribution is to synthesize those facts, authenticate them with Scripture,
and then show the general public (along with academic elites) what scientific truth reveals.

Here are some key lines from the book (in quotes) which may or may not be followed by explanatory comments from me:

* "Earth is much more than a planet with primitive life residing upon it. It is a planet with a very long history of life, a history that led to the
appearance of human beings. We are not constrained to a low population in a few restricted areas. Humans currently occupy all of Earth's
landmasses. We have multiplied to a population exceeding 7 billion individuals, and have achieved a high-level technology that continues
to advance on a global scale. All these features would of current human existence and civilization would be impossible unless life originated
on Earth as early as physically possible." (p. 93)

* "The anthropic principle has become the prebiotic principle" (p.21). In other words, whereas naturalistic scientists have long claimed
that the humanity's existence places severe constraints on the Milky Way Galaxy, the solar system, and Earth, scientist
Marcelo Gleiser (Brazilian Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Dartmouth College) has said that what was formally seen as
constraints is now understand to be nothing more than "the preconditions for primitive life."

* "What would be easier to take for granted than dirt? However basic is may seem, the ubiquity of dirt represents no small coincidence.
The complex story traces back to . . . "

I will end by saying this: Hugh Ross makes the history of dirt fascinating reading just as he does the history mountains and oceans, the moon, and more. That's why I have long stated that Hugh Ross, Ph.D. is my favorite worship leader. All these many facts declare the glory of God, a God so patient and magnificently wise.

I highly recommend this book and hope it is used as required reading in classrooms all over the world.
We are certainly going to use it in Right On Mission Theological Academy. See rightonmission.org.

Heart of Diamonds, by Dave Donelson

The Congo is a very dangerous place for television journalist Valerie Grey in this tragic, fast-paced tale of avarice and betrayal. Amid the bloody violence of the country's endless civil war, Grey uncovers a deadly diamond-smuggling scheme that reaches the White House by way of a famous American televangelist. Grey is pursued by the soldiers of the country's dictator, the mercenaries of the diamond mine's owner, and the rebels seeking to take control of the mine. Aided by an altruistic doctor who struggles to bring medical care to Congo's poor, she must canoe down crocodile-infested rivers, dodge attacking helicopters, and race over teeth-rattling roads to bring their stunning story—one of government corruption, church greed, and brutality among warring factions—to the outside world.

From Publishers Weekly
The ongoing tragedy of the Congo serves as the backdrop for this tepid thriller, Donelson's first novel. After TV newscaster Valerie Grey gets passed over for an evening anchor job at the MBS network, she tries to lose herself in Africa, where she stumbles on a diamond-smuggling scheme involving not only a sleazy American televangelist but also the George W. Bush–like U.S. president. Valerie quickly becomes the target of the conspiracy's members and, predictably, finds herself falling for the hunky idealistic doctor who runs a local clinic. Readers should be prepared for some clunky prose (Valerie's brown eyes flashed a warning, the green flecks in the irises dancing with anger). Those seeking a novel that explores human exploitation in 21st-century Africa on the level of, say, John le CarrĂ©'s The Mission Song will be disappointed. (Sept.)

From the Author
Heart of Diamonds is a high-concept romantic thriller about blood diamonds in the Congo.  The plot involves the White House, the President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and an American televangelist in a diamond smuggling scheme that is uncovered by a TV reporter, Valerie Grey.

The idea came from research I did that was prompted by Michael Fay's fascinating 15-month, 2,000-kilometer megatransect of the Congo basin for National Geographic.  What a great achievement that was!  I've done some pretty hairy trips myself, but nothing like that.  I became fascinated with the Congo and delved into the politics and history of the country.

The concept for Heart of Diamonds sprang from an item I came across in Time Magazine about the cozy relationship between Pat Robertson, the famous American televangelist, and Mobutu Sese-Seko, the dictator who raped the Congo for thirty years.  When I found out Robertson owned diamond mines and timber concessions in the Congo--making profits from slave labor, no less--I simply had to write a book about it.

The Robertson-Mobutu connection makes for quite a story.  Mobutu was essentially put in office by the CIA. He ran the country--which he renamed Zaire--with an iron fist and stole literally billions of dollars.  He also had one of the worst human rights records in Africa, which is saying a lot.

Pat Robertson, on the other hand, is one of the most successful evangelical preachers of all time.  He founded the 700 Club, ran for President of the United States, and has millions of followers who subscribe to his version of Christianity.  You wouldn't think these two men would be buddies, would you?

But they were.  Robertson was deeply involved in business dealings in the Congo.  The Time article reported that once, in the late 1980's, Robertson and his wife and their entourage were flown from Paris to Kinshasa on one of Mobutu's personal Boeing 707s.  In Zaire, Mobutu personally took them on the presidential yacht on a ride up the Congo River to visit one of his estates.

Robertson had a relief program in the Congo--Operation Blessing, which is still operating today--as well as a private concern called the African Development Company, which made investments in mining, lumber, agriculture, transportation and power generation, supposedly with an eye to plowing the profits back into humanitarian efforts.  One of those investments was a diamond mine in a small town south of Tshikapa near the Congo's border with Angola.  That's where I placed the diamond mine in Heart of Diamonds.

One of the men who ran ADC for Robertson was Bill Lovick, a former minister who was dismissed by the Assemblies of God church in 1985 for questionable fund raising practices.  Readers of Heart of Diamonds may find some interesting similarities between these men and some of the characters in the novel, notably televangelist Gary Peterson, the missionary Thomas Alben who runs the diamond mine, and Moise Messime, the President of the Congo.

As I read more and more about these guys and the things they were doing in the Congo in the name of Jesus Christ, the more intrigued I became.  Heart of Diamonds obviously isn't their story--the smuggling scheme, the connection to the White House, the U.S. military involvement, and so on are completely fictional.  My heroine Valerie Grey and the other characters are figments of my imagination, too, although they certainly have personality traits similar to real individuals.

What is not fiction in Heart of Diamonds is the terrible plight of the people of the Democratic Republic of Congo, which is the direct result of the unadulterated greed exhibited by people eager to control the vast natural resources of the country. Mobutu may be long gone and Pat Robertson's business interests gone with him, but the brutality continues.

Fast modern adventure
By Harvey Karp
This well-plotted thriller starts with a rebel attack on a Congolese village as told by a boy soldier who was captured and pressed into service in the raid. His tale sets the book's tone, which builds slowly to a high-octane finish.

The action and suspense centers around a diamond smuggling scheme uncovered by TV reporter Valerie Grey. Hatched by missionary Thomas Alben, who runs a diamond mine owned by American televangelist Gary Peterson. Peterson is in cahoots with the President of the Congo, but doesn't mind skimming some of the mine's profits, when Alben comes up with the idea of smuggling raw diamonds into the U.S. inside little dolls.

The slimy preachers use some of the diamonds to bribe a White House aide to recommend a U.S. military mission to the Congo supposedly to support Messime's government, but actually to protect the diamond mine. When Grey goes to the Congo to cover the action, she stumbles upon the smuggling scheme. She tries to get the story on air but the missionary, the Congolese army, even a Terminator-type secret agent sent by the White Hous try to stop her. It all happens in the middle of a civil war, which provides some horrible background scenery and complicates Grey's struggle to get away.

Grey has help along the way, from Jaime Talon, an altruistic doctor who runs a clinic in the village where the mine is located. A romance blooms between them. Even with all the fights, raids, battles, chase scenes along crocodile-infested rivers and over refugee-clogged roads, the story is fast-paced with the romance allowing the reader to breathe as it unfolds. It will make a great screenplay.

A Super Heroine
By Betty R. Crumpton
Valerie Grey, the heroine of Heart of Diamonds, is one of the more nuanced characters in a popular novel. She's brave and not afraid to confront forces bigger than her, but still has plenty of internal doubts about what she's doing and why she does it. Valerie is a star international TV reporter who has been under fire in war zones many times. She has also posed tough questions to world leaders without backing down.

Her internal doubts come out when she is turned down for a big promotion and can't find the words to argue with her boss about it. That makes her a lot more like a real person than some sort of super-woman.

She really comes across as real, though, when you read about her love life. It's kind of a mess. She's been kind of living with an executive at her network but, when he proposes marriage, she can't bring herself to do it. The whole subject just creates doubts in her mind about whether she really loves him or not. Then, in the Congo, she meets an altruistic doctor, Jaime Talon. That's when it gets really messy.

The two of them are thrown together as they try to escape the bad guys who are smuggling diamonds out of the Congo in a scheme that Valerie discovers. Their romance grows despite all the flying bullets and gruesome battles. I don't want to give away the ending, but suffice it to say that David Powell, the man who wants to marry her, re-appears in the end.

Couldn't have said it better myself
By Beth Fehlbaum
I agree with Nora. Heart of Diamonds is a fantastic ride, cinematic in nature. It's timely as well, and I hope a movie is forthcoming!
