Nice collection of first part of Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck

I collect comics and I ordered this as a Christmas present for someone who also enjoys comics. The book was not wrapped in plastic, so I was able to read through it in order to write this review before giving the gift. The book was only available in hardcover when I purchased it. The book is beautiful and the colors and text are bold and sharp. The book cover is blue inside.

"Preface" is a 1 page intro to the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck story. It mostly discusses how Rosa tried to incorporate Carl Barks' account of Scrooge McDuck's early life into the Life and Times.

Pages 9-144 of this book contain the first part of the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck (the story was in Uncle Scrooge #285-296). Chronologically, the prequel to the story is Uncle Scrooge #297; this chapter is not part of the original story.

"Behind the Scenes" discusses the chapters of the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck in greater detail. It gives more information on how and why certain things happened, and some trivia/ facts about how the story was written.

"This Should Cover It All!" contains 10 full-page pieces of art done by Rosa between 1992-1994. These are covers for Barks classics, other projects and special art pieces.

" The Life and Times of Don Rosa: The Buckaroo of the Biography" is a 2 page biography discussing how Rosa worked with Disney Comics and Gladstone on the Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck.

I've also attached a couple of photos of the book, including the table of contents.

Before I ordered this book, I looked all over online for details about what was in this book and I could not find any information beyond "maybe part of Life and Times". So I hope this review will be helpful to you.

One of the Best Don Rosa Volumes Ever

Excellent copy. This version is a compliment to the smaller books put out some years ago reflecting 12 issues of Scrooge McDucks Life. It also chronicles some of the missing pieces in the large format hard copy "Life and Times of Scrooge McDuck by Carl Barks, published in the mid-1980's.
Worth having and certainly worth reading.

Very valuable intro to quantitative and qualitative res.

I found this to be a very valuable book, and have recommended it to several of my colleagues and doctoral students. I have also cited it in two papers so far, one to appear in Educational Action Research, Vol 7, no 3 (1999). The book is unusual in that it deals in depth with both quantitative and qualitative research, showing equal respect for both. It explains in a systematic and plausible way underlying similarities of logic between the two approaches. This will pave the way to greater understanding between practitioners of the two approaches and, one hopes, broader utilization of the insights of each.
The explanation of basic concepts of research such as reliability and validity and methodologies such as case study, ethnography, and grounded theory is remarkably clear, and once again helps the reader see links between quantitative and qualitative work. While the book does not claim to provide detailed help with research methodology, it takes the reader to the point where one knows where to start and where to go for additional help. Most importantly it will promote understanding of the research process rather than uncomprehending application of techniques. In my view, the book represents a very important step forward in thinking about research in education and other social science fields.

Easy Introduction that is getting deeper

This book is for sure a good introduction for quntitative and qualitative research, but it can do more also for researchers with some experience. It is close to the praxis of empirical methods and explains away from the theory how to do things. It is much better than the most introductions I read and also less confusing than a lot of the specialized books for quantitative methods. It is more than just an introduction as it puts together all important terms and shows the difference and how to use them!

About the Author
Sherman Alexie is a Spokane/Coeur d'Alene Indian. He earned a 1994 Lila Wallace-Reader's Digest Writers' Award, was a citation winner for the PEN/Hemingway Award for the Best First Book of Fiction, and was named one of Granta's Best of the Young American Novelists. Alexie is the author of The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven , which served as the basis for a film that premiered at the 1998 Sundance Film Festival. His book Reservation Blues won him the Before Columbus Foundation's American Book Award. Alexie's several books of poetry include I Would Steal Horses, Old Shirts & New Skins, First Indian on the Moon , and The Summer of Black Widows.

Why I use this film to teach troubled teens

I work as a psychotherapist with adolescents and young adults. I use "Smoke Signals" with them by assigning them to rent and view the movie, which is always enjoyable because it's witty, humorous, wise, and significant. The movie poses two essential questions: 1) If someone else has mistreated, hurt, abandoned, or disrespected you, is it possible to forgive them if they've NEVER asked forgiveness, never done anything to "put it right," never returned in atonement to undo the damage, and never begtun to deserve it? And 2) if it *is* possible--and it may not be--SHOULD you? Because if you do, doesn't that just make you a willing victim by letting them "get away" with what they did, and pretending the relationship is okay again?
Victor lives in the tension of this dilemma. As a 12-year-old youth, he witnessed the effects of alcohol on his family. His father vascillated between being loving and instantly "turning" to become hostile, violent, and humiliating to the young boy. Victor finds himself becoming more deeply embarrassed by his family's domestic abuse and alcohol use, even defiantly scolding his own father that his favorite Indian is "Nobody...nobody...nobody!"
Victor's mother awakens the next morning to see Victor angrily smashing his father's beer bottles on the back of his father's picup truck (the two things he believes his father loves more than him), and the epiphany stuns the mother, who insists on an immediate end to family drunkenness. Proving Victor's fears true, the father--forced to choose between alcohol and family--flees the family, and never returns. It is within that unchanged arrangement that his father dies, 8 years later, having never returned home.
Victor and his oddball companion Thomas make a side-splittingly funny journey south from Idaho to Phoenix together to make arrangements for the father's possessions, confronted by the racism, peculiarities, and hostilities of the non-Indian "outside" world. Thomas, having never seen the dark side of Victor's father, irritates Victor with incessant stories and tales about the dad's greatness.
Victor, having been so deeply wounded and sold-out by his father's abandonment, has become tough, fierce, aggressive...and lonely. "You can't trust anyone!" he scolds. "People will walk all over you!" His mistrust poisons his friendships, family, and feelings about his father. He's become just another tough guy, hardened by family violence and substance use.
In Phoenix, Victor finds an essential artifact of his father's life: a worn-out photo with "HOME" written sloppily on it. At once, Victor begins to realize that his father's fatal flaw was COWARDICE: the father could confess his sins to new companions a thousand miles from home, but could never return home and undo the damage he'd caused. And so his son has suffered for 8 years. Victor begins to realize that he himself is allowing his actions to damage others, and that it is cowardice, not manly independence, that controls his decision to remain distant and fierce.
Victor slowly begins to repent of his own abusive toughness, cutting his hair in symbolic repentance (traditional hair-cutting is done either in grief, or in repentence for shameful behavior). The process of discovery continues when Thomas angrily confronts Victor about Victor's own behavior: remaining cold and distant from his own mother, acting forceful and ruthless to others, etc.
Victor ends the film by freeing himself of his 8-year hostility toward his unforgiven father, and in that final act of forgiveness we find that the greatest benefit is for VICTOR, who becomes kinder, funnier, gentler, and more confident in his friendships. The significance of forgiveness, he learns, isn't to let someone else off the hook, but to let one's own self off the hook of the pain caused by another, rather than carrying that pain inside for years.
In the final scene, this release of aged anger is represented by the cathartic release of his father's ashes into a river, meaningfully shown in film montage as expanding in power from streams into torrents, much like the energy of either a person enraged or a person set free.
It is at the end of the film that we really begin to understand Thomas' original cryptic remark at the beginning, "Some children aren't really children at all. They're just pillars of flame that burn everything they touch. And some children are just pillars of ash, and they fall apart as soon as you touch them."
Not one single person yet who's watched this film at my urging has disliked it.

Is Victor sastisfied with the world.

To me this book had an effect it showed a normal life style of an a native american instead of a regular drunk indian. This book does not hide anything it gives all expressive and shows lots of details of how the real world is.Not only is this book a reference for my class, but also a look back in my history. Victor has a mirror reflection in my life because of the way he was raised. With all the alcohol and verbal abuse it probably reflects on most peoples life, if not it will most definetly make a change in the future. Alexi is a very good writer and i hope to meet him, and i wish he can come out with another book like that.

Inspirational and well-done; all young men should see

Having seen this movie as a preview on another video, the subject was intriguing. The storyline was a breath of fresh air. The unfolding of the details of the common bond the two friends shared and the understanding of the father's behavior the son came to understand following his death was superbly done.
I found the constant talking of the one friend, although bordering on nerve-racking, was actually humorous in nature and the character was one to love. It was rather like Laurel & Hardy, straight and funny guy tactics, rarely seen today without one character overpowering the other.
I would highly recommend this to the younger set and young adult males who are having problems with relations with their fathers.

About the Author
Barnett-Emeritus, Merritt College

Raymond A. Barnett, a native of California, received his B.A. in mathematical statistics from the University of California at Berkeley and his M.A. in mathematics from the University of Southern California. He has been a member of the Merritt College Mathematics Department, and was chairman of the department for four years. Raymond Barnett has authored or co-authored eighteen textbooks in mathematics, most of which are still in use. In addition to international English editions, a number of books have been translated into Spanish. Co-authors include Michael Ziegler, Marquette University; Thomas Kearns, Northern University; Charles Burke, City College of San Francisco; John Fuji, Merritt College; and Karl Byleen, Marquette University. Michael R. Ziegler received his B.S. from Shippensburg StateCollege and his M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Delaware. After completing post doctoral work at the University of Kentucky, he was appointed to the faculty of Marquette University where he currently holds the rank of Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics, and Computer Science. Dr. Ziegler has published over a dozen research articles in complex analysis and has co-authored eleven undergraduate mathematics textbooks with Raymond A. Barnett, and more recently, Karl E. Byleen. Karl E. Byleen received the B.S., M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in mathematics from the University of Nebraska. He is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science of Marquette University. The language used in this book is simple and the graphics and images easy to understand. Helpful guidelines and lessons for learning the basics & fundamental of C# programming.

This book is excellent and very helpful. Inside of this book the author has described all the basic of C# programming. I really needed to learn about this programming and my course tutor also suggested me about this book. I purchased this book a few weeks ago and by reading this book I am impressed. This book really fulfilled my expectation and by reading this book I got my questions answers. By the help of this book I have learned about the basic features of C#, variables, operations techniques and much more. This book guided me about the control structure of C#. Overall, I am pretty sure this book is perfect the beginners. I am glad to read this book and I will recommend this book to them, who wants to lean basic C# programming.

Good Starter but a lot of errors, unfortunately

I am new to C++ but have done a fair bit of programming in C, Objective C and Java, so I thought i'd take a look at a "crash course" to get me started. This book is really good for that, but it has a lot of errors, which although not really affecting the readability of the instruction - are very frustrating and make me wonder if the book was proof read at all. That aside, i think the book does a good job, I think it would suit beginners who want a starter book before jumping into a large over-whelming text book which they may not understand right off the bat.

I really enjoyed how this book not only explained how to do some pretty cool things with C++, but it also included a history of C++. This crash course is an excellent introduction to the topic and I feel well versed on the topic after this single book. I would recommend this book to anyone who is new to the subject and looking for a clean concise explanation for how to get started. There are numerous examples that will contribute to your better understanding. Grab this book if you would like to learn more or keep it as a future reference.
