About the Author

Dr. Isaac D. Gottlieb, PhD, is a professor of Management and Statistics at the Fox Business School of Temple University and Director of the China and Singapore programs. Great book for efficiently learning excel

Pros:
Great way to get up to speed quickly
Every chapter comes with spread sheets for quickly duplicating everything in the book
Lots of good review questions at the end of the book
Teaches and reinforces efficient ways of solving practical business problems

Cons:
Incredible amount of typos for a second edition
Kindle version doesn't include an index with page numbers - so its useless

This is the second version of Gottieb's very popular book teaching excel to business and finance professionals. I spent about a week 4-5 hours a day working through this book in conjunction with the downloadable excel files going through it chapter by chapter. It was time well spent and my excel skills improved dramatically.

I found the reviews of the first version of this book to be right on. The author does do a great job of painlessly teaching the information. True power users will likely learn something new but may find some of the information to be too basic.

The biggest problem with the old version is still here. Surprisingly, this updated edition is still filled with lots of typos, errors in spreadsheets and a few incorrect answers which seems to get worse towards the end of the book.

For example, figure 29.7 contains formulas that omit the last row. The screen shot in excel even points this out and includes the warning indicator that the formula is missing adjacent cells - i.e., the missing row. Chapter 29 question #6 option #3 asks the reader to calculate the IRR for a situation with an initial investment of 300,000 to gain 450,000 at the end of year 3. My excel spreadsheet and an online calculator indicates the correct answer to be 14.47% but the book says 7.46%.

I would guess I probably spent an extra 5-6 hours overall from double checking and reviewing stuff due to the errors in the book. For some readers this won't be a big deal. However, for those of us meticulously going through every exercise in the book it does get quite tiresome after awhile.

So why did I give it 4 stars and not a lower score? It really is organized incredibly well and laid out in a way that makes it easy to rework the problems and integrate the most efficient process for solving a range of typical business problems. I had tried other well reviewed books previously but found some of them took too much time and effort trying to figure out what the author was trying to teach and then to learn how to do it in the spreadsheet. As a result, I never got very far using those books.

In this book, the author includes hundreds of well thought out screen shots with arrows and inserted notes pointing out where the reader should be looking, what exactly they should be clicking and how to perform the new skill as effortlessly as possible. Yes, it is more expensive compared to other books teaching similar skills but far less time is wasted learning the new skills.

Other notes:
I used the kindle version on my Nexus 7 and found it typical of most kindle version textbooks. Most of the graphs were easy to read requiring no extra zooming, there are no page numbers in the table of contents but does contain active links and the index is useless containing neither page numbers nor active links.

This book is specifically for Excel versions 2007 and 2010 with extra material for Mac's excel 2011 and excel 2003. I started the book using my old copy of excel 2007. However, once I saw a few cool newer options that wasn't in my version I decided to try excel 2013 via the free trial as this was going to be my one chance to really spend lots of time learning excel so might as well try to be up to date. This worked out very well and the book was still very easy to follow. I'll most likely continue the Office 365 subscription as its clearly better than my old version.

Good for beginers

Gave this to new grads in my office who started working right out of college. The reason I picked this is because the content was basic and did not require any prior knowledge of excel. By the end of going through this book, the person got the hang of excel which was the whole purpose of the exercise.

If you already work with excel, then this book is probably not for you. I will suggest it for beginners. (I work with excel on a daily basis constructing complicated financial models, so my definition of basic might be a bit high, but you can judge the level of this book by using the free previews). Intermediate and advanced users can probably still pick up a few new tricks from this book.

Its everything I expected

As an MBA graduate in a tuff job market, any little advantage helps. Knowing excel is a huge advantage and this book helped me become more comfortable and more efficient with the program. Besides some typos, the book was everything I hoped it would be.

Excellent reference text for the OR nurse!

As an LPN, this book was specifically recommended to me by my OR department manager to help me learn the basic information I needed as a scrub nurse. I have found it to be a highly valuable tool in my learning process. It has been very informative and useful as well as easy to read and includes many helpful pictures and graphs that aid in learning and comprehending the material. I know this book will also be a great asset for me in completing my RN to further my education and knowledge as an OR nurse. I would recommend this book to anyone entering the OR field of nursing! I know I will find this text an indispensable reference for many years to come! I was just wondering if there is an additional workbook that correlates with this text book?

Most comprehensive Operating Room text there is.

I used Berry & Kohn's Operating Room Technique in nursing school 26 years ago and it is STILL the best text there is about perioperative nursing. This text ranges from basic Aseptic Technique to the more complex surgical procedures. Positioning, procedures, and practice guides make this a must have for anyone in the field of surgery, whether they are a surgical tech, an RN, or an educator. I use it in planning inservices for staff development.

This is a nice short lunchbreak read. I'm not known to this particular world of shifters but this reunion does want to make me get the other previous books. You can read this as a more or less stand alone, not too many characters are involved to loose track of them.
For the story itself : (I'll try to keep spoilers out of it)
It's got a nice rush to the storyline, no beating around the bush. I disliked Keith from the start and the only reason I'm giving this four stars is that there was a huge missed opportunity to make that conceited bastard pay for what he did. As is, he didn't even put up a fight, so no wonder Silas wants to wash him off... I would have toyed with him, really make him pay, give false insecurity... It's possible I'm a bit vindictive when getting my anger out!
Conclusion :
If you like a well written, lustfull, fast paced story with a HEA, then Reunion is the e-book to get on your device of choice.

The story was a great addition the Order of Alphas series, perhaps more a of prequel in some respects. In a nutshell, Silas meets his mate Reina. They share a steamy night of ecstasy and he walks away but not without some angst. He views himself as a loner holding himself accountable for the annihilation of his clan. Fast forward 5 years. The stakes are higher and walking away is not an option. The book is short (sigh) but the passion between the main characters adds just the right amount of spice. Even the gruesome bits makes this tale fun to read. I eagerly await the next book in the series.

This was a quick read that covers a span of time but nothing's missing. Silas and Reina met, it was immediate sparks then an abrupt disappearance. Years later he's drawn to her only to find she's not alone. Can he get his family, does he want a family? Well in the end, years later, it all brings us back to the present issues at hand.

Excellent introduction for this price. Didactically perfect with a real life sample application.

I couldn't imagine that a book with only 67 pages can offer a decent introduction in the complex subject of Eclipse 4 RCP.
I was surprised: It can! How?

+ Only the important code snippets are printed and explained in the book (the rest of the code you can download - it contains one sub folder per chapter)
+ No redundancies (once a concept has been explained no further pages are wasted to show the same code for another example - there is a simple reference to the downloaded code)
+ No SWT or RCP knowledge required, only basic Java and Eclipse knowledge. This is achieved by providing the ready-to-use code snippets and explaining only the relevant concepts)
+ Almost no semantical errors in the book
+ Easy-to-read language
+ Well structured content with hints about the level of difficulty
+ Very good book layout
+ Short chapters (not more than 1 - 3 hours per chapter -> easy to work through)
+ Answers almost every question I had during reading in the "how it works" part of each chapter
+ Uses only one sensible but complex example Application that is extend chapter-by-chapter

Handicaps
- The source code download (as of June 25th, 2013) did NOT contain ALL source code classes (I have already informed the publisher about this error).
Mainly the java source class for viewing the search results of the example application is missing.
This is not a show stopper since the implementation steps are described in the book and could be considered as an exercise.
Nevertheless this was the reason for my initial 4 star rating (instead of 5). UPDATE 07/14/2013: The published sent me the missing classes via E-Mail!
- The book has an average of 1 or 2 syntactical errors per page - but this doesn't disturb and does not affect your understanding when reading.
I send my errata to the publisher so that they can correct at least the ebook versions of the book.
UPDATE 07/14/2013: My errata is now available on their web site.

Summary:

The author does really understand his craft (programming and didactics): The book was exciting to read from the beginning until the end.
The content offers a quick and good overview and is a perfect starting point to dive more deeply into the details (like SWT, plug-in developemnt etc.)
using a search engine. After reading this book I felt prepared to start programming an Eclipse RCP application myself.

Recommendations:

-> After finishing the book I recommend reading the (online) blog of Lars Vogel
(vogella .com) where you can find articles about SWT, Eclipse RCP and more (don't buy his book, it does not really offer more content).
-> Do not buy the printed book or the (DRM protected) Kindle edition of this book but go to the web page of the publisher
and buy the (unprotected) PDF version for only about 6 Euros (which also contains the epub version of the book for your ebook reader!).
The chances are good that the errata are corrected then.

While I would prefer Netbeans Rich Client over Eclipse RCP, this is probably one of the best, if not the only, beginners introduction to mysteries behind Eclipse RCP software development. My only gripe (minor) is more content to do advanced development on the platform.

He talks about recurring images in his movies--water, horses, fire, snow--but adamantly refuses to divulge what they mean, as he feels that would impose his own meaning onto the audience. At times cagey and resistant to interviewers, Tarkovsky nevertheless reveals his vision and his rigorous devotion to his art.

This book succeeds on many levels.

I've read numerous books on communication, body language, and charisma over the years and by far this is the most actionable I've read in a very long time. Not only does Holly Grant lays out a step by step action plan to follow but does so while walking you through his personal journey of transformation. I've been an introvert for an awfully long time but I've been practicing Holly's stuff over, and I truly became more charismatic every day. My conversations are improving, I'm making more friends and just enjoying life a lot more. That being said, this is not a magic bullet. You have to actually do the exercises to reap the results, and it takes time. Building your personality is just like building any other muscle. It takes time to reach your full potential.

Sometimes, it is only a matter or improving your personality; and if you happen to find it hard, then believe me, this book is for you! About the Author
Elise Forier Edie is a professional playwright and author. Her award-winning scripts have been produced all over the country, in New York and Los Angeles, as well as such far-flung places as Jonesboro, Arkansas, and McCall, Idaho. She is best known for her family musicals (written with composer, Tina Lear), "Cathy's Creek" (winner of the Bonderman/IUPUI Award and published by Dramatic Publishing, Inc), "Valerie and the Bear" (developed by id Theatre at Seven Devils Playwrights Conference) and "Rebel Girls" (developed at Cap 21), but she has also written scripts for adult audiences, two of which, "La Llorona" and "The Last Stand of the Comanche Rider," were selected for development at the National Playwrights Conference at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre Center. In addition to plays, Elise writes novels and short stories, and teaches writing and theatre arts.

Great women's reading group material!
